Another drill-powered ascender

I made a suggestion to Paul Cox about making something similar when he had drill supply issues. This device looks cool, simple.

Looks like needle bearings on the rope guides - 10 years late to the party but better late than never. One mentions fall arrest so maybe its a full rollgliss knockoff with centrifugal brakes? Trouble is the shape doesn't look right for that. Burrrapeg's addition was drill torque restraint so you don't have to fight the load IIRC. These two look to be tough wrist specials. These units might be in another thread.

Somewhere I have video of my son zipping up a similar unit about 2014, minus the final drive gear reduction. Drill barely had enough torque to lift fat me but worked great for lighter loading. It had a split clamp that grabbed the drill "snout" right behind the chuck. 2nd version dissected the drill, inncorporated, added secondary fat guy gear reduction - "Arbscender". novelty gear anonymous :)

I think everyone who is interested has gotten all their questions answered by Ryan Jenks' deep dive videos, but this group is always glad to be able to ask questions directly to the manufacturer in a public forum. You being here will go a long way to building trust.

Thank you Matias.

In 2023, we have been busy producing the AWAH Z2. In 2024, we have been busy producing the AWAH Z3. Until today, we have time to search for infomation about AWAH on bing.com. We have not yet opened an account on social media outside of China, so you may not be familiar with us. However, our products are well known on DouYin which is Chinese version of Tiktok, and in WeChat platforms. Ryan from HowNOT2 in the United States is my friend, his evaluation and promotion really help AWAH a lot. At present, we have about 10 employees responsible for production, so I will have more time to communicate with others. I am also a rope lover who has been promoting SRT and DRT techniques to workers in China for many years, and have written manuals for AWAH Z2/Z3. I believe I have the ability to answer everyone's questions. I am not very familiar with the rope techniques used by arborists, and I also want to learn more knowledge here. Thank you all.

I thought there was another more recent thread discussing this device, didn't see it so adding it here.

HowNot2 just posted an interesting new video about the Awah Z3-FIRE where you will now be able to change the wheel inside to run larger ropes, and he specifically mentions 'arborist ropes from 11mm to 1/2" (~6:20 in the video) which would be awesome. I actually considered buying one on the presale but the device was only for up to 11mm at that time which is smaller than any of my climbing ropes, and smaller than any of my mechanical SRT devices are meant for. If it will now/soon run on the 11.5-11.9mm ropes I'm already using for SRT, and ESPECIALLY if they get it PPE certified like they are talking about, I expect to buy one eventually.

Santiago was making one with a Rolgliss (spelling?).

Burrapeg doesn't this video make you want to gloat a bit and say been there done that :) It comes down to the shiv/sheave :) Wonder what standards they're going to choose to certity to.

LOL, just saw your post, Bart. I might have made the best mods finally (I own a machine shop and small foundry so I have an unfair advantage) but the original idea was Santiago's and he was the one who put me onto the bargain Rollgliss's being sold on eBay from down near the big ship scrap yards in Brownsville, TX where they were scrapping offshore drilling rigs loaded with this type of equipment. I love my two modified Rollgliss R500's. They handle any brand and size of rope I have ever tried down to 9mm rock climbing stuff and up to the big Vortex Cool, with minimal or no slippage, are quickly midline attachable, are very easy on the rope unlike a Ronin, and the big DeWalt drill comes back off in seconds so I still have a drill. Finally, batteries - the Ronin uses an expensive proprietary battery only available from them. Big contrast to the DeWalt, where I can get a range of sizes and capacities of battery basically at any big home improvement center. A final advantage for me over a gas powered Wraptor is less noise for rec climbing in a park or neighborhood. I try to climb with foot and knee ascenders as often as I can for exercise but I am also 72 years old now and there are simply times when I want to save my energy for once I am up in the canopy. These things are great for that.
