Going through maintenance on my chipper and have noticed the feed wheel motors are moving a lot more than normal. The upper feed wheel has chewed into the retainer plates. None of my manuals have been helpful in figuring this out. Neither has altec unfortunately.

As long as the motor to feedwheel connection hasn't been damaged, I'd probably just weld those damaged sections in. You can clean the edges up with an angle grinder if you'd like. Essentially returning both pieces to like new.

I was thinking of doing that. I just don't know why it's doing it. Can the motor shafts get out of balance? The pin is still in this side. Seems odd to make a wearable design like that.

We managed to somehow bend a shaft on my Altec, this was a long time ago but I seem to remember it was rubbing like that too. I have no idea how it got bent. Only thing I can think of is maybe feeding with an excavator and pushed or pulled on a log that was engaged in the wheels.

Are you saying that the interlocking notches on those two pieces ian't stock?

How thick are those? They look like 3/4"

In all my years of looking at old big-iron machinery I've NEVER seen that much wear without the whole machine being shot.

How many hours of rubbing wouldit take to wear away 1.5" of iron

My thinking exactly. I have no idea. Something ain't right but it still runs good. No play or anything. The motors do a wobble when running, but only this side has wear

Interesting. I'd not thought of that.

The other side is oriented opposite. I feel like it should be for more vertical movement. It's done it since I bought it. I'll have a couple of weeks of mostly injections so I'm planning on pulling the pin and seeing if something is warped.
