Alpine Stump Grinder

I was looking thru the archives last night researching what chipper to purchase, Bandit or Vermeer, and saw something that caught my eye. This was a post of a stump grinder built by Alpine. I believe Mangoes has it. http://www.alpinemagnum.com/index.htm

Rental prices are to high for me to grind the stumps on most jobs so I was tossing around the idea about getting a small one. This looks pretty versitile and was wondering how well does this grinder preform? I like the fact that the power head can be use to saw wood as well as grind a stump. I guess it has options.

I have done, but it isn't recommded, large diameter hardwoods with that machine. Let me summarize the Alpine magnum.

-allows a small co. to do get into stumping with lower expense
-eliminates the need to rent
-can be taken in a chip truck, increasing profits ( everyone else has to make 2 trips or drive 2 trucks)
-can do any stump anywhere
-compliments the bigger stumpers a larger company might have for all of the above reasons

I am now considering the purchase of a second, as I am starting to make money RENTING to peer companies!

I have seen those and other ones I am thinking they make a set up for demo saws to have stump blades and a small cart to hold them to. I will ask some buds around they would know more and get links.

a friend of mine in santa ana california (so cal) has two of them. they are a good machine to have if you do a lot of apartment complexes or places that are really tight to get a standard grinder into. my friend has a kan du for the bigger stumps and uses the alpines on slopes, along fencelines, and raised planters. they can be used for trenching or root pruning. they require maintainance and teeth frequently. they weigh like 90 lbs so 1 man can cary it or they have a lil set of wheels that clips on to roll em around on. i m me if you want a contact number to speak with my friend. they are a specialty machine and compliment a regular grinder!

I spoke to Ed Hobbs (recognize the name?) about the Alpine Magnum about 10 years ago. He also has two, and spoke highly of them. They're marketed right out of Washington. I own a Partner 6 hp powered mini grinder, similar to the Husqvarna model but bigger motor. Big difference, works poorly. The only weight you have is the 55 lb of the unit, so I'll sometimes physically put one hand on the front handle (same as normal chain saw) to get the tiny thing to dig in. Have done quite a few stumps with it where nothing else could obtain access. And it only cost me $700 or so.... But the AM really works!

I have had one for over a year now and it is a great little machine. If you have sharp teeth, it will cut pretty darn fast. I have used it on stumps as big as 36 inch diameter and took it from 4 inches above ground to 12 inches deep in about 2 hours, which also included some surface roots. I could have brought my bigger machine, but it was too much trouble to hook up the trailer so I just went with the Alpine.
