A tragic death...RIP

Today I wanted to reference a set of descenders so I went to search Gary Storrick's 'Vertical Devices' website. After a few clicks I found that he has taken the site off the web.

Here is a discussion:

Does anyone have copies of any of his pages? This is tragic and a great loss.

What are the five stages of grief?

Denial
Anger
Bargaining
Depression
Acceptance

I'm in number four

He carved out a niche for himself and occupied it completely. The tens of thousands of us who depended on him are really up a creek now.

The guy's been doing high quality work for free for a long time, the party is over.

I would be a smart move if one of the gear retailers stepped up and underwrote the hosting and development costs (ie: paid Storrick for his time) in exchange for the right to splash their name all over the site. In other words a sustainable business model instead of hoping a lone individual will pour their life into it with zero compensation.

Yup that really sucks. That was my go to site for any gear questions. Unbelievable that he did it without any backing.......

I couldn't accept that. It is important to me that I remain unbiased, and if one manufacturer supported me, it would be hard to prove that I wasn't tempted to bend my opinions. I tried to report on only devices that I own and have tested, or at least held in my hands. For example, I did not rappel on every single basic figure eight that I own, but I did use enough of them to believe I knew what I was talking about.

I don't want to be paid to do what I love, and I want the freedom to write what I believe. I did that for eleven years and I had a lot of fun along the way.

I've had a couple people write to me and encourage me to put the site back. Maybe I will be able to someday, maybe not. The future, if it occurs (as most of us believe it will), will probably be what it will be.

Thanks to everyone for their support over the years.

This is terrible news :(

Gary's site has been a treasure since I found it many years ago. I wish that I would have saved more of the information.

I can understand what Gary has said about continuing.

Gary, I think it's safe to say that some of us who've benefited from your knowledge and generosity would be willing to contribute to help with some of the cost.
I don't know how to do it myself but I think you can setup a paypal contribution account. I'll definitely contribute, your efforts are valuable.

Gary,
Thank you for undeciding!
You've unknowingly impacted many over the years in a truly positive way!

Thanks again..

Hey Gary, if you want a new piece of gear to try out drop me a line through our website www.ropetekwraptor.com and I would be more than happy to send you a demo unit.

Great to see the site back up and running....
