A question about tree camping (Moss, READ THIS!)

So I was browsing through another tree climbing forum and ran into Moss's photos of his treeboat hammocks with mosquito netting. The pictures are great and I was excited to finally see some real photos of the mosquito nets mounted in a tree but my question pertains to safety. The photos can be seen at this link:

When I posted an old photo of me hanging my hammock between two trees (see below) I was told by two different arborists that I was going to die because if the wind picked up the trees would not be able to sway independently (due to my rigging) and one of them would snap... and I would die.

BUT! Moss is a damn good tree climber and the photos he posted show him hanging between two trees. Why was I told that my chosen site was unsafe? Is it because one tree is thick while the other is relatively skinny? Or maybe it is because I am a lot closer to the canopy than Moss is in his photos? If that is the case, then how do I know how high I can safely rig two trees together with my hammock?

Thank you for your answers!

I have a Boat w/ Net, but have never used it. (Not my choice; due too many medical speed bumps.)

I have always hear that you should REMAIN tied in, when in the boat overnight (harness & TIP).
It would make it more uncomfortable, & difficult to pee (especially for women).
I don't know what folks actually do.

I have ALSO always heard that you should never climb alone ? ? ?

I also heard from an extremely good, safety oriented climber, that he & his girl friend (also an extremely good climber) spent the night together in a single boat.
They were not tied in !

They instead rigged a 2nd boat underneath them as "last chance" insurance.

Seemed pretty "iffy" when I heard it.

Greg, in reference to your female pee question: my last tree-camping adventure was with two other climbers, one of them being a female.

When rec climbing we use rock climbing harnesses because they are much lighter to pack in. An added benefit is that girls can detach the rear bunjee cords and go pee while hanging as if they were sitting on a toilet. Haha. She said it works. I use a pee bottle.

I think your photo looks alright, and if your tied in as a safety its gotta be alright.
I mean your not camping out up there during a nor'easter or a hurricane...

Your hammock has some sag which equals slack so tree movement is allowed to an extent. If you're tied in when you're in the hammock it doesn't matter if tree movement pops a hammock support, wouldn't be fun if you were asleep but you would be inconvenienced ;-) Tree and/or hammock failure possibility is related to high winds. When you're at any height in a hammock and everything starts rocking and rolling you descend to the ground, common sense. It's pretty much impossible to sleep when winds really pick up. I see zero danger in your hammock setup as long as you remain tied in. -AJ

That is great news! It will really open up some awesome tree camping areas for me. Thank you guys. And thanks Moss for the pictures in the other thread, I had been waiting to see the mosquito netting on that hammock.

Fluffy, who had the black round setup? That looked pretty cool as long as it didn't get to winding. Where was mrs. Fluffy, I didn't see her in your river camping vid.

I can't find info on the round tree camping tent.

Fluffly you got a name for that one?

Cool video TreeFool!

There is (or was ?) a commercial round hanging platform / tent. I can't recall the name.
I think info was posted here several years ago ?

Great video, FluffyFish! Thanks for sharing it with us here on TreeBuzz forum. I love your joie de vivre!

Thanks guys! And yes, Devon made the portaledge himself. It is just a prototype but it works quite well! He plans to start a business selling aerial camping gear which is how we met. We both build custom portaledges and happened to live within 20 miles of each other. What are the odds?

Monkeylove, the Mrs still has yet to join me in the canopy! That trip would have been perfect for her if she wasn't stuck at work. Very few mosquitos, a sandy beach, and warm weather. Everything she loves! Haha,
