A new beer classification-A 6 percenter

If the proposed buy-out of Corona beer by Budweiser is approved that will make 94% of the brewing capacity in the US will be controlled by two companies.

Bud/Corona and Coors/Miller will have that share of the market. To me, so what.

That leaves 6% of the market will be what we think of as micro-breweries or other names. I'd like to see if a term for these breweries could become a meme.

Calling them a 'sixpercenter' is what I'm going to call them. Not a marker for alcohol percentage by any means. Just to pay respect to small business.

I'm with ya Tom. I'm presently drinking a Founder's Centennial IPA (the IPA by which all others shall be judged). Can't stand Big Beer. Buddy of mine went to a McDonald's in Germany and ordered his meal along with "an American beer."

They brought him his food with a water.

The only growth happening in the beer market is craft brews at a rate of 11%. That's why the big beers are merging. It's the only way they can increase sales.

Give me a craft brew over that big brew swill any day!

I love micros too and I am fortunate to only drink good beer these days, but there is something to be said for PBR and the beast. I remember being a broke young landscaper/treeworker. People probably thought I drank PBR because it was trendy. Not even close. It was economical!

My step dad once said "son there is no such thing as a bad beer, some are just better then others". Have to say I agree, although i like to keep fruit out of the equation. I do enjoy my micros but theres nothing better then tecate or bush pounders when im fishing on a big river in the summer.

My normal approach to ordering a beer in a place that I don't know is to ask for a beer from the smallest and closest brewery. There is a really typical look that I get that I can interpret as 'We only carry 94% beer.' They'll list off the major brews or I'll look at the list. If there's nothing from a small brewery...I order iced tea.

THAT look is precious :)

I just picked up a sixer of Shiner FM 966, named after the farm to market road that's just south of the Shiner Brewery...mmmm!
