A good machine to pick up wood

My Dad is looking into a machine that can pick up a nice size piece of wood. I'm talking over 1,700lbs, preferbaly the 2000lb range. Were on a tight budget and will probaly uy it after winter and I was just wondering what you guys thought was a good machine. Looking to spend no more than $25,000. Were looking at skid steers mostly, maybe a small loader, is it has enough capicty,, like the Swinger, but that seems alittle expensive for us. Any comments or ideas!!! Thanks

Well Ranger you and I are in the same boat. I an looking into shid steers why You may ask cause they also come with the many lil attachment points to get the jobs done , forks , gapple buckets , ooo and my faverite stump grinder.
In a tight budet deal look into a machine that could do more than just haul and move logs, think about hmmmmmmmm can we do a stump with it, and when we are done can we do this with it, plus they are compact ti fit in tight places.
I do get a real kick out of working with mini skid steers.
just something to think about thats where I am heading.

Cool. I'm trying to tell him the smaller one would work just as good, as he dosen't do alot of big removeals and has a friend that he can borrow one from. I told him you would have the best of both worlds, especially if he got a Ramrod 950 with a 950lb capicity. Thanks for the help.

Here you go. Bobcat A300 . It will not tear up grass. This is both a skid steer and all wheel steer machine with the flick of a switch. These guys are asking $26,000.

Put a Beaver Squeezer grapple attachment on it and you'll be set. The grapple is pricey though.

I've been dreaming of this combination for a while now.

If you need a narrow machine to pick up wood, with a good lift capacity, go with a Gehl mini articulated loader. It has a higher tipping capacity than the boxer, it is twice as fast, and it will not tear up grass. Compair specs. Gehl vs. Boxer

The other added beauty of the articulated loader is you get to sit down while operating it.

That means that you need to get in and get out.

We use a Bobcat MT52. With a "sort of" branch manager grapple. You can just hop on the back and ride away and hop off if you need to move something. It's nice not to have to crawl out of a cab all the time.

The bad thing about the mini is that I got soggy around the midsection from not draging bush all the time.

The boxer didn't stack up to the cat IMO.

By the way, the stump grinder attachment for the bobcat did not perform up to snuff. fine for grinding out shrub stumps but that's about it!

I think the mimis would be a grrat first choice. I have a full size and a mini. The mini lacks the weight capacity but for residential work is used 8 times as much

Gehl says 38" wide on thier mini loader. So, can you still fit one through a 36" gate? Here is how I think it may be doable. Get real close up to the entrance, turn your wheels and fit in diagonally, then as you get close to the center of the maching, you can turn the other way and proceed diagonally through the gate. See the attachment to understand my suggestion.

Go ahead. Tell me I'm crazy.

It's worth a try.

Damnit Jim I'm an arborist not a fence installer!

I stand by the fact that a stand-on unit is better. that way when the downspout falls down after being propped up, you just walk over and flip it up. don't have to hop out of the cab.... I would probably just run it over at that point. Especially on a Friday afternoon!

Zac buy yourself a real loader especially if fences are a problem. This is our machine.(For some strange reason gates are always exactly the same size as the machine??????)

Check again. Our Boxer 526DX will lift 1050 lbs and still goes through a standard gate. I like being able to hop on or off the back of the machine quickly. The Boxer definitely suits our needs.
