"A" Frame

Re: \"A\" Frame

Iwas wondering too. Nice Idea on A frame....How much weight was it holding? any idea.

We had to calculate the approximate weight to figure out what size lumber to build the A frame out of. Right off hand, I don't remember. Sorry.

Re: \"A\" Frame

Norm's A-frame looks like it would be the quickest and most pracical for his situation.

Some of you other guys have great improvements, but I can't see it being as simple of a solution. I think those other ideas would have you on the job site longer than necessary.

That is my only point, Norm's idea would be quick and plenty strong to get the work done. IMO...

This attachment is what I would consider building.
The inner structure with the header could be bolted into the legs and be adjustable for height.
The tree could be strapped to the header.
Guys could also be added near the top for added support if needed.

Kevin, I like the sketch that you have on the left, the timber post and bracing. I have thought about using the same type of setup for bracing a fallen tree on a cottage but the job never panned out.

I don't think I would need the inner structure on the job that I had bid on, but it looks like it would work well for a heavy tree.

Re: \"A\" Frame

Norm, nice job.

Is the thing you've only had to do 5x in 35 yrs, BUILDING a prop using lumber (as opposed to using forked brances etc from the tree), or is it using any kind of prop at all in this type of situation?)(in other words skipping a prop and using eg. another crane or ropes or whatever to leave the butt up in the air)?

Just wondering if you normally use props made of tree limbs or you just rarely use props of any kind.

I've always used tree limbs but if none are available on a future job its nice to see pics of alternatives.

Re: \"A\" Frame

We use adjacent trees and rigging whenever possible. We've used "Y" crotched branches on occasion for smaller trees. But this tree was over a small wooden deck and a fixed gas grill. There was no room for error. IMO, the A frame was the solution.
