Get a 5/8th black. Cmi if budget, or ISC if splurging. 5/8th ISC small is all you will ever need I believe. Pick up a 8ft and 10ft deadeye with 2 pinto rigs. They can handle all the brush you can throw at them plus perfect to act as redirects for the block. Good to go. Let me know how you get on......

I rigged everything from 2012 - 2017 on my CMI block and 2 Pinto Rigs. Everything.

If I was starting from zero today, I would get a CMI 5/8 block on an ultra sling, and 2 X-rings 28*20 on dead eye slings.

Pretty unbeatable beginner setup there. Couldn’t have said it better myself. If today me could go back and talk to my younger self I’d say splurge for the Isc RP251 block right away. They are bomber and will last a career of treework. The only other thing I would add is a couple of rings on pocket slings.

It is a relatively negligible difference in price between the medium sizes of rings and the pinto rigs. I would add support for going that route first and adding rings as you desire to learn to splice, as they really shine most in spliced products.

I found some different ropes on sale this week, one being Samson Stable Braid. If I use the double braid rope type, then I guess I'll need something different than natural crotch or my slings with steel carabiners. If so, what should I start my rigging collection with? Block or some sort of ring? Rigging stuff is expensive and I only do this occasionally. Craig

Id just invest in a good block. Doesn’t have to be a dmm impact block, ISC makes a good variety.
Rings are much cheaper but are just ok at many things. A block is great at most things.

I agree, I moved away from rings and back to blocks....so much smoother and easier on ropes.

For future reference we’ve gone through two of the RP123-CS 20,000lb pulleys from CMI as chipper/mini redirects. The needle bearings toasted, guessing the bushing ones are more rugged. That style pulley with the cmi quickie shackle and ultra sling make for a nice/fast redirect but don’t recommend that specific model.
