What size chipper do you want to tow with it? I'd make sure to check the frame around the steering box. I've seen that generation break the frame multiple times. The autos are a 3 speed non lockup version. On the other hand, the price is right. That cross over toolbox will be nice to have as will the dump bed.

Likely never anything larger than smaller sized (9-12" chipper size).

The trucks a perfect size for a 12'' chipper and smaller. Guessing engine is a sm block 350. Not a bad engine. 3spd auto is gonna kill your fuel mileage unless you work semi local. Looks from pic that the scissor of the ram may have been fish plated? Hard to tell. Remember .... this truck is 30yrs old. Although priced right it could nickle and dime you to death in repairs. Take someone with you that is knowledgeable if you look it over. Truck looks in fair shape for 30yrs so some one cared for it. Plenty of good tool storage .... a plus. The beds also almost there for chip duty.

For 30 years in New England there isn’t enough rust! Looks like a solid truck. That cross box, if the inside is in good shape, is worth almost what they are asking for the whole truck. The really appealing part of the truck is if something is not running right or it breaks down.... it is very simple to figure out where the problem is, there is no computer, emissions, or fancy electronics. Fuel or fire, ain’t gotta go far to figure it out! Maybe look at building a true sub frame for the body, rather than the pressure treated 4x4’s although they will work for the time being. Good luck, hope you wind up with a new truck!

87 was first year of Chevy fuel injection in the full sized trucks. That truck could be carbed or tbi. Tbi is very simple compared to modern fuel injection but it works very well and parts are cheap. That truck is going to struggle with a 12" chipper and a load of chips. It would do much better with a 9". We had a c30 with a 350 4 speed towing a trailer weighing around 5000 lbs. Up some of the hills around here it was 15mph in 2nd gear. Some of it depends on what gears are in the rear end. Speaking of rear ends that should a a 14 bolt in it. They are extremely strong for a 1 ton axle.

So several red flags with the truck, fried wiring harness, wood screws and a shit load of clamps on the exhaust, "small" stuff like that. But my buddy and I are doing it. Drives real nice, bodys in good shape, nothing overly concerning. The thins that were wrong were things I'd also expect to see in a 5k truck for sale.
So my buddy and I bought it and got him down a little more. Pretty excited
