$800 to spend - tell me what to buy!

Fellas - Fellas - Fellas:

I decided on a stihl 362 with a 25” bar. I’m 80% satisfied with my decision lol. The saw is still decently light; I’ve used it in the tree on a handful of occasions. Cuts really well on big stuff too. If the wood is 24” and greater she does struggle ever so slightly, but that’s expected.

I’m not upset with my purchase. I know one day in the future I’ll def need to get a 461 cause you just can’t slow that thing down. But what I’ve got is doing just fine!

Thanks for everyone’s feedback!

Ok. I go from a 261 in 661. In tree or ground. Also use an 880 pig occasionally in tree of flushing large stumps. Nice you are happy.

That's a nice price, that's close to what a 261 goes for. A good 60cc saw is quite versatile, if you don't have a whole range of different sizes. Excellent with an 18" or 20" , and can pull a 24- 25" if needed. I've run a 28" on my MS361 before and it did fine in silver maple and cottonwood. Bar would probably cook and warp if I tried it every day on hardwoods. It's got the power, just not as much oiler output as I'd prefer.

Good point on bar lengths. I think I will invest in a
18” or 20” bar and save the 25” only when I need it

That saw would never handle my hardwood trees. When I am.over 20" wood I want torque and chainspeed....

If I wanted to spend $800 on a new saw. 572

Have alot left over with a echo 620 or another 150 saved 590. Just be sure to tune. Lean from get go.

Put a 20” bar on that 362 with RSK chain if you have the experience and comfort level with a saw to handle a VERY aggressive chain. It will become a whole new saw, and positively rip through wood. That’s my combination for an all around ground saw, and my climbing saw when I’m hanging off a crane. Not too heavy, but plenty of power for most crane cuts.

I run a 18” on my 261, a 20” on my 361, and a 25” on my 440. The 28” lives in the tool box on the truck, and gets slapped on when needed.

Minor derail... How do you store the 28" bar? I generally do the same with a 24" bar as we have smaller trees, but worry about messing it up in storage or having rust start in humid truck box. Same with extra chains, if they don't get put away oiled turn rusted super fast.

I got a couple strong little magnets I use to stick my 32" bar to the inside of the lid of my pickup truck toolbox. Keeps it out of harms way and easily accessible. Plenty of room for a few more bars there too.

If you got an aluminum box, you could try glueing the magnets in place. Mine's steel.

I drilled a few holes in the bottom of the box, mostly to vent gasoline fumes but might be helping humidity not build up. Also possible the holes are allowing moisture in. There's some pigmat in there to soak up oil drips or gas, but it seems to soak up regular moisture too, don't see much rusting.

I have big boxes, about 5’ that I can step inside of. It’s hanging on one of the walls
