SA 10-2-2010 Child Injury – SBL
8-Year-Old Critically Injured by Falling Branch
ROCKFORD, MI -- An 8-year-old Cedar Springs girl was critically injured Saturday afternoon, as she tried to hurry away from tree being felled on an empty lot in Rockford.
The 1:45 p.m. accident was reported by a Cedar Springs man who was logging a vacant lot on Ella Terrace Boulevard, off of Jericho Drive. The new street is in a new housing development called River Bluffs, near the Rogue River. Kent County Sgt. Tom Raymond said the child either was struck by the falling tree, or injured her head as she tried to avoid it. She was taken from the scene by Rockford ambulance to Rockford High School, where she was flown by Aero-Med to a Grand Rapids hospital. The man cutting the trees had a group of children with him, Raymond said. No one else was hurt in the accident, and it is still under investigation. The scene was an undeveloped housing project, with lots marked off but no construction under way. The tree removal was being done by a private individual, not a contractor for the developer, Raymond said.
