625 clutch belt tension

Whats up guys. Just bought a used Vermeer 625 at an auction. It was from a rental company so Im going over it to make sure everything is OK. The cutter disc belt seems to be loose, it basicaly hangs freely and makes quite a bit of noise when I disengage it, so I pulled out the manual.

It says that the belt should be 1.005 times larger enganged than disengaged. That seems pretty exact for me. I guess that the belt should be loose enough to not make the pulleys turn when disengaged, but at the same time it shouldn't have any slack in it. Is this correct?

Ill try to post a pic later. Any help is cool...

My problem is really when I disengage after running the machine. The belt seems to bang around and make alot of noise. Dont know if this is that bad or not.

Here is a picture of the belt disengaged.

They say that when engaged the belt should be 3 to 6 mm away from belt guide. Mine seems further.....

Ya the disc turns quite a long time after disengaging. I guess that means the bearing is in good shape.

You think that I should loosen the belt. I was thinking of tightening it so it couldnt bang around everywhere when disengaged. But maybe loosening makes sense.

To clarify, take the chipper out of gear, that means to put slack in the belt so it doesn't grab and turn the pulley. From what I can tell, the chipper isn't fully "out of gear" when you expect it to be.

Loosen that bad boy up a bit and see what happens.

Thanks guys! James, I was gonna order a spare one a wait till this one was realy done. Maybe Ill just go ahead and change it. Jim, Ill try loosening it and see how she runs.
