Pulling it, and wearing out your drivetrain, brakes, suspension, etc are two different things. I got a new transmission out of pulling my 4400# chipper/ chips with a 1/2 ton, 2wd pick-up a lot, when I first started out. I wasn't excited about the bill.

If its occasionally, it will be a lot different than frequently.

I would imagine it weighs about 2000 lbs.

The Vermeer weighs 1900.

Re: 6\" chipper preference???

Yup, electric brakes would almost be a must, especially if you're hauling chips.

I think max towing capacity on a compact pickup is about 3500 lbs.(seems like a lot) Pay load is maybe a ton.

Would be a cute little urban set-up though, maybe good for a shrub crew.

Re: 6\" chipper preference???

here is my first set up with this chipper. front wheel drive got into all kinds of nooks and crannies.

Re: 6\" chipper preference???

What if you cut off the tongue and the axles, mount the thing sideways on the front of a tandem axle dump trailer(with dump box shortened by 6 feet). 1 ton dump should handle it, no? Maybe 2.5 ton, blow chips into the truck and load yer firewood into the trailer, AND the mini could ride in the back of the trailer too......dreeeeeaaaming......

Quite the creative fellow you are.
Dave has a trailer like that, mini skid rides on the platform, no reason why you couldn't set your chipper up there.

Re: 6\" chipper preference???

Tom,

As it happens, I've been whoring out my climbing to a few outfits, and one uses a Bandit 65AW, one has the Vermeer 625, so I've been using them daily.

Very little to choose between the two, you have to process the brush pretty much the same for either one.

The Bandit spits the chips further than the Vemeer, the Vermeer has turf tires, so the Vermeer can't hit highway speeds, but you can roll it in anywhere.

I'd say it's a Husky vs Stihl choice, both do the job and your results will depend on your dealer service.

Having said that....They both really suck as commercial machines, and I feel pity for the groundcrews using either one. There is a real momentum change for the climber when the crew has to fight their job, battle against a tiny chipper.

But that's just me.

If I had to pull one around a campus, I'd go the Vermeer. The turf tires would make the difference.

Re: 6\" chipper preference???

Tires can be changed, infeed opening size cannot.

I wouldn't buy the vermeer. Someone I climb for hires in a little Morbark, it's got a large feed wheel and does pretty decent.

that would be sweet but you would not longer be able to back it up right to the brush pile. but I guess if you had the mini too it wouldn't make too much difference.
