6-8” chipper

Serf Life

Been here much more than a while
Location
Maine Island
Anyone use some of these or others and can compare them? We’ve rented the vermeer but that’s it, neighbor has the morbark and likes it. Toying with getting one for more island work vs continued renting at $900/wk. Barged to spots w/o rds and moved with mini or tractor through woods hence the size/weight. Tracked 6” salsco was knocking on $50k when last checked so nope. Used Boxers $6-8k locally.

Bandit 65xp: 2k lbs, 25-37hp, 6x12 throat
Bandit 75xp: 2.1k lbs, 25-37hp, 7x12”
Boxer x7: 2k lbs, 25hp, 7x10”
Morbark 812: 2.5k lbs, 37hp, 8x12”
Vermeer 700: 1.8k lbs, 25hp, 6x8”

I love Bandit especially having one built and specing it with labor saving options. If you were considering the 65 XP compare it to the 75 XP for little or no extra weight. They put the same 38 or 40hp motor on that which they put on the entry level 90XP. I rented a 90 with fresh knives on it and it chipped max dia pine limbs impressively.

I’m watching this. IDK anything about chippers but, it seems like it may be my next purchase. Used and I usually only do small stuff.

For clarity sake, I'm saying rent a model of chipper you like to make sure of function. Even if buying a non rental chipper find some way to chip with that same model etc. I've gone and helped on someone else's job to be behind the chipper for a couple of hours.

This is going back a ways from any tangible experience.

Vermeer is a dog and I rather load brush 6x6
Bandit 65 was quite a bit better 6x6
Bandit 75 with all the bells was the best little 7x12 chipper I’ve used. Dual feed wheels 30+hp still light enough two people could easily push it with a caster wheel tongue jack.

I’d look at highest hp, widest throat (kinda the bane of small chippers), dual infeed in that order.

I’m still looking. I really not liking a big or towable unit. Since I usually work solo, I can only take so much and double towing is sketchy. A lot of jobs allow me to leave the debris or I haul it away in my dump trailer. If you have some other ideas, throw them out here. You folks are fully involved in daily tree work so I understand your needs are different. I’m wondering if anyone owns or has used one of the smaller chippers. I’m thinking a unit that I could load in the truck bed. Possibly lifting it with the FEL on the tractor. Anything larger than about 3-4inches, goes in the firewood/fire pit pile. I could use one around the house. I looked at the tractor PTO units but, they’re huge. There’s a PTO unit on site at the forestry project.

Have you looked at the tread about small tree work set ups? One or more people have posted about using push to the back yard chippers or shredders. Asking them about performance could give you an idea. The smallest I've used is a Bandit 6 inch.

Anything you think you want to buy and use I would recommend trying first. Even if you have to travel to a location to rent one.
