Just finished this 40" Norway Maple removal in a postage stamp back yard. 2 loads of chip, 4 loads of wood. No damage.

Nice looking job.

Interesting solution to the lack of a visor/brim on the Petzl.

What is your grapple attatched to??

Re: 40\" Maple Removal (Embedded Pics)

I wear the baseball cap to keep the sweat off my face, helps with the sun too.

Grapple is attatched to a Thomas Mini Skid.

Re: 40\" Maple Removal (Embedded Pics)

Cool. I wish petzal would come out with a helmet with a visor.

I had a Thomas 245 skidsteer, good machine, still going strong 12 years later with a new owner.

How many guys on your crew?

Re: 40\" Maple Removal (Embedded Pics)

very nice, how many person crew did it take and how long? Makes me want to start my own company.

Re: 40\" Maple Removal (Embedded Pics)

what ya have on the job????

Is this a faux pas to ask? Im just curious as I only know what I charge, know what I mean? I think it would be educational for us to talk prices sometimes too.

Re: 40\" Maple Removal (Embedded Pics)

I am the climber, my brother was the rope man. I had an extra guy on for the first day, but he never showed the 2nd day because he must melt in the rain, he was worthless anyways. Spent the day watching me. We spent 2 days rigging down brush. 1 more day to move out the wood and cleanup. 3 days total with 2 guys.

Me and my brother have this thing going where he owns a fence business and I help him, and he helps me with the tree care. I am keeping it small with a 1 ton mason dump, chipper and skidsteer.

Thanks for the props.

Re: 40\" Maple Removal (Embedded Pics)

Very nice job!!! One question though, why not utilize a crane and have that sucker down in 2hrs instead of 3 days. Just thinking the extra cost of renting a crane would have been offset by the time and effort saved. Again nice work.

Re: 40\" Maple Removal (Embedded Pics)

Never used a crane, and wasn't a place to learn IMO.

-My Ford F350 barely squeezed in the driveway.
-There would have been no where to place the picks after they had been cut.
-No place to stack the wood.
-$$$
-No rush to get it done. Still finished 1.5 days ahead.
-Like I said, I am a 1 man show so production isn't really an issue.
-Mo' money in my pocket, not the crane guys

Re: 40\" Maple Removal (Embedded Pics)

Is tree work your primary job? or just a side job? Its hard to tell from the pics but it looks like you could have set the crane up in the neighbors yard and set the pics where your 1 ton is or vice VS. But like you said more money in your pocket. I have to look at things a little differently time is money and granted it might cost you a little more up front you could have cut that job in a third and been on to the next job. Not trying to take anything away from your work just thinking aloud. Nice job regardless!!!

Re: 40\" Maple Removal (Embedded Pics)

It's only my 2nd year in business as a 22 year old. I don't do advertising so all my work comes from word of mouth/referrals. I don't have that kind of work to keep my busy everyday. When I don't do this I do excavation and work for my brother. As a larger company I can understand wanting to get in and out ASAP, it's just not an issue right now.

who are you custom8726? just wondering how great you are?

Never stated I was great and never will. I am always learning new things and any one in this industry that tells you they know it all is plain ignorant. I was complementing him on a job well done and inquired about the possibility of utilizing a crane to make his life a little easier. I have spent my fair share of hrs roping and rigging to safely remove trees but after years of abusing your body you learn to make your life as easy as possible in a already strenous profession. Why, who are you?? are you great?...

Re: 40\" Maple Removal (Embedded Pics)

Brendon, nice work.

In the short future, you aught to look into working in conjunction with a crane. It does save wear and tear on the climber's body. I don't feel as worked when I do a crane job. I can see you know how to dismantle a tree well. You'll pick up crane removals just fine.

I am just a 2 man operation. So, it's just me and my full time groundie. (I can get more guys if necessary). However, our crane operator says we run as efficient as a 4 man crew. (He's being nice, but I know we can put down some good work). After a while everything just clicks. You just need to remember to reward your groundie at the end of the day. After all, he will end up doing a lot of work.
