3 PDF\'s from Seminar, A1 find, get them now
Here's a link to where you can now download 3 PDF's from David Evans of the UK Arboriculture Society.
I attended this seminar last year and it was great, he's a humourous speaker too but knows his stuff.
Basically the middle PDF titled Pruned to Death is an absolute ripper. He even had a case study that ran over a number of years illustrating the perception of pruning to improve is actually the opposite.
Page 64 for the "pollarders" is very interesting.
Page 76 shows a graph of how it's detrimental to a trees defense system to over water/feed
Page 77 shows the shift in the defense system from pruning
Pages 70 & 80 show what the pollarders, pruners, drop crotchers did and in Davids own words he said they did a meticulously marvelous job as aborists and the tree flourished ... too the naked eye. Following pages show what the consequences were right down to the stump.
Some very interesting things in there. If you have any questions feel free to ask as the PDF is basically a copy of his overheads and he was chatting ... I have a very good memory for these sorts of things and can give you the story to the slide if you need it.
For example, Page 105 diagram C he had a shot at Mattheck because when have you seen a tree grow branches at the bottom like illustrated after you cut the top off? Of course it's BS, they dont. Subsequent pages have some calcs to show how little you actually need to take off to do reductions.
