I might be able to make it down to check it out but it’s bat season right now and we’re buried trying to get everything down.

Kill as many trees that bats might potentially roost in before they migrate north again. Look up Indiana bats and you might get an answer. This is our busy season. We do ROW work for the gas company.

According to them it is. I’ve yet to encounter one. Apparently I must scare them away prior to March 31 and they know not to roost in other trees that I must remove at a later date. These are also the people that yell if I step in a wet area of ground while the neighbor is dumping a used refridgerator into the same area, just outside of the blue stakes

Anyhow I hope to escape and make it down to chat with you again. Maybe this time my coffee cup won’t be filled with Jim Beam. Just maybe though

I see, bats are now problematic enough to necessitate removing trees? Odd indeed.

Happy bat season everybody!!!

I get that part, is it endangered bats or something? Or just not removing too much habitat before a given biological calendar kind of thing?

Indiana bat. They are not allowed to remove potential roost trees (loose or exfoliating bark - white oak, silver maple, hickory, dead ash, etc., etc., etc....) during roosting season.

There may be other options...when I worked at ODNR, we were at a training (probably 15+ years ago) for Indiana bat. They were talking about timber harvesting restrictions. Concern was expressed that sometimes the best times to log are when it is dry in the summer, so is it worth tearing up the ground to maybe possibly protect a few bats that are not likely there. One of the guys asked "could we log at night since that is when the bats are flying?". The USFWS guy contemplated it for a few seconds and responded "Yeah...I don't see why not - that would be a workable solution."

We’re on ROW work for the gas company and plus a few other municipal jobs that have federal funding. I just did a small clearing for a road extension that was pressed because of the bats but they showed no other environmental worry. It’s a good cause I guess but kind of a hoax as well. A 22 mile by 120 foot wide clearing was done last summer close to us and not one Indiana bat was found by the group hired to investigate.
