16 strand rR

What's the shortest (easiest short length, not like the shortest length possible) length of rope one can use to make an rR? Trying to make a secret weapon kinda deal with xrrs.
Thanks peeps

What type of rope? Hollow braid or double braid?

My understanding is double braid is limited to approx. 5 fid lengths between eyes. I've fudged this slightly - maybe to 4ish - but it's roughly accurate.

Hollow braid with lock Brummell splices should enable a much shorter length, although your rings may be a challenge for the second eye.

Hope that helps.

Ps. Curious if anyone else has a different answer.

Are you talking about the core less ring and ring type splice for a 16 strand line such as safety blue? If so I have heard 18" is possible I have only been successful to 24" though.

Yes, that is what I'm talking about. Are you saying that the whole piece is core-less?

I'm thinking something 28"-30" long is what I'm looking for. What I'm going for is a xrr eye2eye that will be a 6 wrap prussic on a 5/8ths rope with a larger x ring.

That should be doable at that length (I think). I call it core less because when you begin the splice you remove the core and then taper, bury and cross over the cover to keep the rope round.

Edit: this one is longer than you are looking for but I seem to remember they told us 18" was the absolute shortest you could go with this splice.
I think I might mess with it this afternoon when it gets hot.

I'm very curious to learn the modifications used to make an eye-to-eye splice (RnR) with only 18" between eyes. Using typical double-braid splicing methods, you'll need to pull enough core at Point X to correctly bury the tapered cover. My quick math says that is just a bit less 1/2 fid (Mark 2 on Core) + 1/2 fid + 1 full fid length (Mark 3 on Core). Without sufficient length between the eyes, it will eventually become impossible to fully run home the second eye splice

I've cheated the amount of cover to bury (slightly less than a full fid) and worked extra hard to extract enough core, and gotten results of 4-ish fid lengths between eyes - approx. 38" with 11.7 rope.

What are you guys doing differently?

Craig

As far as I know there is no way to do a e2e splice in 16 strand rope that is less than about 36" without cheating on the manufacturer-specified amount of overlap inside the core. If you want one shorter than that you should consider a sewn version.

I am using 16 strand 1/2" line. It's not double braid. The technique was taught to us during a splicing symposium that we hosted, taught by the fine folks at knot and rope.
Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to mess with it today. But tomorrow is supposed to be another hot one so maybe in the afternoon before the dentist!
