16 strand and kernmantle rope splicing

Just order some small hanks of 16 strand arbormaster blue streak and the fly.

I've found both instructions and have looked over them. The 16 strand looks pretty simple. Kind of close to the 12 stand but with a little bit different part at the end.

These will a piano wire fid work? And what tips would you give a novice?

Jman- I think you'll find the 16 very do-able. The fly can take a few more trial runs to get the rhythm down.

For the 16, the first mark is at 28". Make that mark at about 36" or so. This will give you a realllllly long tail. Do the rest of the splice the same. When you get to the part where you are about to bury the tail, taper those last foot a little more. The thinner that is, the easier it is to pull through the crossover. Someone started calling that a super-taper, and I like that name.

Yes, the wire fid will work great for the 16. Not much really works great for the fly splice!

What’s a good technique to getting the core strands out of the 16 strand rope? I don't want to hurt the cover strands in the process. Also, when you pull out the core strands from points C, you’re looking at over 28" + spliced eye length +22" of core to pull out for the splice.

I'm reading the instructions but that just seems like a lot of core to be pulling out at one time. The instructions I’m using are from Samson because its Samson rope, 16 strand class 1. I can understand the length of the tapered tail but pulling out 55” or so of core just seems like a lot. Thanks in advance.

When you talk about the "super taper" would you count down another 2 or 3 pairs and cut those out when your counting down the 5 pairs?
