118# Grrl can't keep ballard line from crossing

118# Grrl can\'t keep ballard line from crossing

I am brand new at being a hole Girl-this week! I'm running a GRCS (trying). When I use the Ballard break with my line in the piggy my line begins to cross over the coils as they travel toward the lock end. What am I doing wrong?
the Piggy tail is at the mid length pint of the length of the Ballard.

I'm using 3/4" samson stable braid rigging line with 3 to 4 wraps. when I unwraped it so the tangle was out/off I had two wraps left and it just about pulled me around/through the da** thing...helmet, sweat, fear and all.

Re: 118# Grrl can\'t keep ballard line from crossin

123 Deboralee, if you are using the bollard in the GRCS, you do not use the pigtail. The cross bar at the end of the bollard makes the pigtail unnecessary. You MUST use the pigtail when lowering while the winch is installed.

Good luck and drive carefully.

Re: 118# Grrl can\'t keep ballard line from crossin

If this is the famous Greg G I have a question. Do you think the new 28 v Milwaukee drills have enough torque to run the GRCS?
They're rated at:

SPECIFICATIONS

Voltage 28 DC

Chuck Size 1/2 in.

No Load Speed 0-400/0-1,000 RPM

Torque 1,081 in.-lbs.

I know the engine drills are lacking. I'd love to use a drill but I don't want to drag heavy cords or use a generator.
Thanks,
Phil

Does this mean I will have to pull my loads in a direction that is along the radius of the tree it's anchored to? I don't see how I can hold against the lock pins otherwise.

As long as I have your attention I want to say, I don't have a single complaint about the winch; that thing is great! After I watched the DVD I was afraid but when I got to use it I see that there is nothing to fear...except for the guy up in the tree.

(Note: I accidently wrote this under Cory's avatar; however, this is Chris (KyLimbwalker).)

This happened to us at first as well. Now we include in our GRCS kit a sling and a carabiner to be installed above the GRCS on the trunk to redirect the rope into the GRCS. Now, no problem with the ropes walking!

Hey Greg, I ran into an old friend of yours here in Louisville. Small world.

Re: 118# Grrl can\'t keep ballard line from crossin

Like Greg said, when using the aluminum bollard you don't use the pigtail. The pins at the end of the bollard feed the rigging line in properly. You'll want to be holding the line so that its at an angle greater than 90 degrees in relation to the length of the bollard. Clear as mud?

When using the capstan (winch), a sling with a biner and pulley placed on the tree over the GRCS seems to help keep the rope from crossing over. Definitely a bad thing when you're holding a lot of weight.

Re: 118# Grrl can\'t keep ballard line from crossin

Smallwood, I don't think that there is a cordless drill anywhere with enough power to do much with your GRCS. Gas powered drills are not much better. I am afraid you are stuck with generators and/or extension cords. Th City of Milwaukee Forestry Department has a couple of trucks equipped with power inverters, so they can plug a large drill right into their truck. Those guys rarely use the handle.

Hey Chris, I'm glad my old friend in Louisville remembered me.

Thanks and Be Good.
