    Risk assessing a tree

I was told white pine gets stronger, for a short period, after it dies. Is it similar for species like white oak?

    Risk assessing a tree

Thanks for the replies. I am taking a 24" dbh white pine down later this week. Not due to its health, but the customer is putting in a water feature. The pine has what appears to be an old wound from a flush cut. I noticed some carpenter ant activity, but the wound looks very old. If you...

    Risk assessing a tree

What type of insect activity do you consider normal vs cause for concern ? Is seeing a single termite or carpenter ant enough for you? In some cases it's been blatantly obvious to me (dying white oak with a super highway of carpenter ants). Other times I'll see a few termites on the trunk and...

Termite activity or carpenter ant on white pine

Thanks. I will talk to them about removal. I climbed it last month for a deadwood pruning and things were solid. Hoping it's still safe ...

Termite activity or carpenter ant on white pine

Old Eastern White Pine. It has an old pruning wound from a flush cut. Homeowner said it's been solid until a few months ago when they noticed termite dust in the wound and at the base of the tree. Upon inspection, it may be carpenter ants ? Canopy is healthy and full. They don't want to...

    Cut through holding wood ....

It was faced into the lowering tree. Would it have been better to aim off center of the lowering tree ?

    Cut through holding wood ....

Thanks. The rigging point was about 10' - 15'above in an adjacent tree. There was no lowering device. It was a butt rig The top was being pulled about 45 degrees upward toward the rigging point. I am thinking I didn't leave enough hinge wood + groundie pulled too hard, now that I replay it

    Cut through holding wood ....

I was considering that. My groundie said he wasn't pulling hard during the cut, I'm not so sure that's true. It certainly would make sense with how the butt end went first I think I'm just going to use a tag line on the dead ones in the future. This was a wake up call

    Cut through holding wood ....

Thanks fellas. I completely forgot to mention this pine was stone dead and void of any sap. Btw my bar never pinched

    Cut through holding wood ....

Hello. Been climbing about a year and today I was taking a small pine top. I had it rigged in an adjacent tree and was using a webbing sling a couple feet up from where I cut. When I made the back cut, the tip of the top leaned back towards me, while the butt end ended up swinging away toward...

    562xp not starting when hot

So this started (pun intended) out of the blue. In the midst of taking down a large Osage Orange, I couldn't restart the saw. Saw is about 1 year old and was used all last season without issue. Always run Husky premix. Starts fine cold. This is the auto tune model, wouldn't think it's a...

    “Rope Only” Canopy Anchor??

I have done this with an Alpine a few times. I see that no one else has suggested it though, is there something I don't know? Lol

Face cuts and staying sharp (pun intended)

This past year was my first year doing tree work. Just when I feel like I'm getting decent with face cuts, things are slowing down here (mostly just clean up from storm damage). For those that don't cut a lot during the offseason, any tips for staying sharp ? Thanks

    SPRAT

Thanks. Thats the exact configuration I'm using. I wonder if my ASAP isn't tending well because I need to weigh down my backup line.

    SPRAT

Thanks. Are you still using an arb saddle?

    SPRAT

Is anyone here SPRAT or IRATA certified? If yes, do you incorporate secondary lifelines into your system ? (ASAP etc ) I have 2 bridges on my harness and tried rope walking with an ASAP on my second bridge with a second line. It didn't tend like I thought it would ....

    Tulip poplar -rec climb?

Took a look at the poplar today. One section of the trunk looks like this. No other red flags that I see. During the summer, the canopy seemed healthy. Is this normal? I don't see any fruiting bodies, missing bark or other signs of decay
