    If you had the red wire on the stud with the gap you say, that's the ground stud for the solenoid which grounds to the case of the starter. You definitely could have burned up the motor, especially if its only clicking now. With your ignition switch on , you should be able to jump those two...

    Looks like the loose red wire should connect right there where the other red cables are I would say.
