DRBetz, do you happen to know whether the slower more powerful was a Ramsey or Dynamic? Definitely agree, I'll take slow/power over speed for tree work in general with other winches I used over the years.
I recently picked up a Bandit 12xp. Have always love these machines. This unit does not currently have a winch. In the market for a winch to install on this machine.
Very curious about what experience people have had with Ramsey versus Dynamic hydraulic winches from Bandit for these machines...
Thanks for the clear explanation of your thought process. Definitely impressed with how the downrigger performs compared to other AFDs, especially with regards to its ability to handle a much broader weight range of pieces. The midline attachability really increases its usefulness in more...
Nice smooth system, that was sweet! Resulting from lack of available help in my region, I've spent the last decade solo rigging a fair amount. I do have a steady groundie now, but I definitely agree - nothing like the peace and acute focus of solo tree work.
I just recently added the...
I have been thinking recently about welding aluminum fairleads, rubber blocks, and brackets on the back of the GRCS aluminum bollard to receive a 4" ratchet strap. It would have to be done right to take the load, but might make a pretty sweet rig in a light portable package. Or... just do the...
Thanks guys, love the Muggs mod, that's brilliant!! That's probably the best solution. We use our grcs 99% for lifting/lowering scenarios, and always feel like I'm not utilizing the nice aluminum bollard nearly enough for negative rigging bigger pieces. Honestly, I guess I'm just lazy.
Like the...
FTC Micro 2.1 vs Stein SMB1000? Anyone have hands on experience with both of these devices? I mostly use a porty and a GRCS. Looking for something that's more portable and easier to set up solo than the GRCS, but smoother than the porty for letting pieces run.
Sorry, I'm just chiming in now - been on some sequoia climbing trips with Ancient Forest Society, and tree work back here in Maine has been super busy. Not to mention I'm a technotard - not my strong suite.
Ancient Forest Society has a number of research projects studying the giant sequoias in...
Thanks for that Rico. The Xstatic I'm running is only a 150'er, and I have been curious about it having a nylon core which usually equates stretch. I have a short hank of Cherry Bomb from when it was first released 10+ years ago? It's been a great rope, but it's also been a long time since I've...
I've been logging some hours on Xstatic recently and appreciating the minimal bounce on ascent. Looking for another similar rope for SRS to add to the arsenal. Sherrill's/Sampson's Silver/Midnight Ivy are listed as having less elongation that Xstatic. I've climbed plenty of Yale's Poison Ivy...
Oldoakman, washing - also a great idea, thanks!
I do have several other new to me 11.7s that I'm trying out at the moment that are running well without any readjustment from my other ropes. So, for the time being my offer still stands for anyone who is interested in a basically new 150' hank...
Nice, thanks a bunch for the betta Serf Life! I've heard others mention mondo milking with the hyper. Hard to go wrong with yale. Been climbing some scandere that seems pretty nice so far, super smooth and stays round even in mechanicals. Only have a fairly short hank, so haven't got a feel yet...
Serf Life, do you find that you can switch back and forth between your Hyperclimb and Yale 11.7 without readjusting your BDB?
I keep the adjustment on my BDB nearly wide open, with a light touch to move on my other 11.7's Yale, Cherry Bomb, Cougar puke, etc. I'm also a skinny little bugger, 150...
Only have one short clean climb this hank of Hyperclimb. Nice rope, I just quickly realized that it slides through my bulldog as I have it adjusted for all my other 11.7's. Finished the climb with my Akimbo (that I don't often use) and it ran great. The BD is my go to device and I'm too lazy to...
Thanks for the continuing ed.
Interesting, if I'm understanding correctly that, other factors being equal, steel produces more friction than aluminum. Mentally it seems harder material would equal smoother/slipperier, but viscerally aluminum does seem "greasy" when working in hand.
Also...
All great bits'o'wisdom - Thanks!
TreeSpyder, pretty sure I'm over simplifying, but (amongst other thoughts) are you saying that, all other factors being equal, with each added 180 degree arc of radial friction, there is a compounding result of produced friction? In other words for a given...
I've been using a size large Port-a-Wrap for many years now for most of my basic rigging. Probably a bit overkill, as I'm mostly using it for 1/2" line. When we rig 5/8" or 3/4" line, I usually switch up to the GRCS.
I'm curious whether anyone can compare which size of Port-a-Wrap is easier to...
