I'm a bigger guy, 6'1" 290. Monkeybeaver 1.0 is what i use. Very comfortable holds a big saw with no problem without suspenders.
I've tried the sequoia even before I'd gained the most recent weight and I found it very uncomfortable to hang in. On spurs was fine.
Just a thought on the cdl. When buying new you can have the title of a trailer derated to under cdl requirements. So you have a heavier duty trailer that is still road legal.
Curious, is there much of a DOT presence on an island that inhabits 200 people?
When comparing different...
My favorite in tree saw until I need something bigger is a modded 261 with 18" bar. Small enough to fit through a crowded tree with plenty of power when you need it.
Rarely advertised. There are multiple trailer sales around here and only one was willing to incorporate this design into a build for him. I plan to buy the same style.
They have gas shocks to assist with the weight of the ramps and he uses his to load a vermeer atx850.
With hand loading, look into a roll off trailer. I don't know if they make one under cdl. You can set the box on ground level and load, then raise onto the frame. You can switch beds as well if ever needed.
Or there is the option of fold down ramps built into the tailgate like this
A buddy...
No fancy techniques but the right harness makes a big difference. And I'm sure not all climbers will agree on "the right harness" for everyone.
A tophandle would pull my sequia down when I ran one years ago. My monkeybeaver 1.0 holds a 500i or 661 with 36" bar with no problem and no suspenders.
I can't say about what is required, but as part of the class, they had me get my med card. Super easy to get and maintain.
The only thing that might throw a wrench in mine is that I have been diagnosed with severe sleep apnea since then. My doc purposely chose an apnea machine that...
I tend all of my devices the same way, apart from using a static cord. Mine does not slip off of the shoulder. This may be due to it being tied at my back left hip and brought over my right shoulder. When not in use I take it off of my shoulder and clip it to my right leg straps.
Large sycamore removal for my neighbors. This tree has been dropping large limbs for years and despite the root rot it's trunk was very solid. Felled with a 500i/36" bar.
No pics of the whole tree as the undergrowth was too thick to see the top of the tree well.
Due to years of...
That's such a simple solution and yet one I've never considered. Thanks.
Yes these Birch are very elastic. I will sometimes do a deep notch without a backcut letting the tension side give way like this for maximum directional swing. With or without a pull line. I also find that rarely...
He really wants to keep it. Although removal of the one would be the easiest fastest option.
I don't believe it is still actively failing, more so that it did in January and then the ice melted. He said it was touching the ground at one point.
A customer has a Birch tree that saw a significant load in January during an ice storm. He has asked me about cabling the tree back to the other leads. Upon inspection the trunk does have damage where it started to fail.
Minimal risk, it's near a home but out of reach. I would definitely...
I've chipped into this setup a few times. F350 11,000gvwr 12' flatbed with an 8' box. Side loaded a mini skid and towed a 12" chipper.
For everyday use, I'd recommend a bigger truck, but for an occasional job or to use a couple of months to increase income and purchase a larger truck, it...
That's a good idea, I might try that, or a wooden wedge would be easier to aquire. I do have them set in a loop before sending them up. Slide the loop open and drop it over the stem. Wrestling them around a big trunk at the end of the day is no fun. It only took one job to decide that...
We had them made locally here. I'm sure they'd ship, but I imagine the freight wouldn't be cheap.
The quote here is slightly different than pictured, it does not have the eye thimble shown. I had them add that after the original quote.
Similar to @Lumberjack. We keep 2 eye to eye slings on the ball but often only use one. I use the CMI slick pin shackles easy on/off.
For 36" diameter plus wood we switch to steel cable slings with sliding choker hooks. Not as easy to use as the nylon slings but it protects the eye to eyes...
