    Cicada mitigation

We have a pretty epic cicada brood on our hands here in Western NC. A lot of the trees on my property are ones I planted bare root and they just got to that 6-10’ height that these buggers just love to hammer. Including some of the worst. The black oak had more damaged canopy that I already...

Pictures after Hurricane Hugo in 1989

Just like you eat an elephant. What a weird saying. Maybe it should be just like you give an elephant a bath. Helene required us all to become our own heroes. Part of my brain has erased a lot of the destruction and insane tree situations we dealt with. But my body remembers it happened. Great...

I was waiting for DOGE to finally trim the 60% excess spending in the Pentagon budget… I thought you said Musk would get to that? I have noticed the line of cars for the local food bank is about 3 times as long as it was, so that’s some big changes!! Bigger is better right?

    What slings do you recommend?

    Absolutely. They are :)

    What slings do you recommend?

The ones we have used are spliced by local professional from 3/4 rigging line (it’s been a few different particular brands over the years I forget what we are on now). I usually use 2x 25’ and 1x 35’ and that gets me home safe, on time or early ;)

    Overuse Injuries

I tried knee ascenders at different times, with good folks who knew how to train, it just didn’t click for my body. This is relatable. For me it’s the fucking mini skid ramps. I just literally can’t lift them anymore. Plus the brush dragging. Climbing extends my spine and provides the most...

    Overuse Injuries

Well, an easy fix there is using an electric saw. Starting even a 261 makes my lower back a little annoyed now. As far as the knee.. just spitballing some ideas… if you’re still climbing… double check your spikes are adjusted to your shin length. That’s done me in before with knee pain. I also...

    How's the work flow?

I’ve been doing some tree talks about Helene failures- I recently did one at a naturalist convention here in Asheville and it went really well, had over a hundred people show up for my talk. I had a table full of business cards and I think like 50 got taken. Thought it would lead to a lot of...

    New device from buckingham

You just reminded me of another great skit, Girl Drink Drunk from Kids in the Hall. Haven’t watched that in a couple decades..

I recently stopped listening to all news and took a break from IG. Significant life improvement. Still check headlines once a day just to make sure the sky isn’t falling. I’ve had times when I’ve been hyper focused on global and local issues but I decided this spring I want to actually enjoy my...

    Sharpening options for 540iXP?

That may have been me saying that. Definitely my experience. Abstinence is the best policy.. Aka keep your top handles away from the ground and from your groundies…

    Beech Leaf Disease

Pretty good study on efficacy of Arbortect 20-S to control BLD, in the newest copy of Arboriculture and Urban Forestry. Sounds like it’s a pretty good option. There’s a discrepancy in the results based on timing of treatment as well- the treatments applied on Aug 7 and July 11 performed better...

    Neruo Divergence (ND). In arboriculture

This is an amazing post and worth a re-read. I was thinking about this idea today and had a vague memory of this thread. Bumping it to get a bigger sample size (Your vote counts! Lol) I changed my vote. One day I started looking around and realized all my closest friends are...

    Today....

Had the new guy retrieve a block in this Black oak. 49” DBH. It survived Helene, with a sizable hickory leaning on it (which was the job of the day). The mostly dead tree in the background is a walnut about 36” DBH. Not the clients tree. The picture below is the trigger point, sort of. After...

    F250 Dump Thoughts

Mine was (is, still, I guess) a 86 diesel f250 with a dump bed. Obviously it’s a lot older than what you’d play with, but dang it can’t do much. I love the company f550, it’s such a great workhorse. A f250 or even f350 will always have a limit of towing and payload capacity that will hamper...

    Small Jobs

I will deflect jobs to small one person operations too... I dunno. The crew is set up for full day jobs and so that’s where we make the most profit. $1000 is about the smallest job we see unless it’s an add-on for a neighbor.

ART BlackBird for "MRT and SRT"

Omg I want that. I love how you pull from the middle of the device to descend, so much closer to you. This climber reminds me of Napoleon Dynamite… Very slick looking device. $620 msrp
