    @KTSmith I was more referring toward the white fungus that is collected I believe from the grade of soil sitting too high on the trunk. I will look up info on the canker thank you for the quick response.

    Totally correct you are looking at gslvanic corrosion due to disimilar metals comming into contact. I think the remaining radical would be the sweat to give the salt which allows the system to give off the electrical component that allows two different metals to corrode at the contact point...
