Shindaiwa has an aftermarket trimmer head on it in this pic. Echo has the SpeedFeed 400 trimmer head on it. Fast string changes without tools or having to take anything apart.
You can save a lot of money on string sections, and time, by buying an "edgit" edging guide for your string trimmer. I bought one over 12 years ago for my Echo trimmer, and wouldn't want to be without it. You can slide it underneath chain link fences, so it makes your line last a lot longer too. You'll need to get a bump advance head for your trimmer, but when you go to bump advance, you use all of the string, not just the outer few inches, like you do with the trimmer heads that use short sections of line. I saw those... was wondering about them. Do you just leave it on the trimmer all the time? Does it cut the string off to length if you overfeed line?
I'm using the high-capacity (20' of .095 or 16' of .105) bump advance type SpeedFeed head on the Echo right now.

It stays on all the time. You just bump until you get as much string as you want, an inch or two, beyond the edge of the pie pan looking part. If you do a bump too many, don't worry, the excess will wear down in a minute. I've had mine on my machine going on 13 years. Works like a charm. It's got a little port where you shoot in a little graphite dust once a year or so. Also creates enough turbulence to blow off the walk after you've weeded and edged. Makes nice right angle wedding-cake-cut edges on walkways etc. Also seems to keep the weedeater unit running at lower rpms. I don't know if that extends the life, but my 13 year old unit has been in for a carb rebuild, filter and spark plug, along with a few handles and switches which degraded just from being older than dirt.
