Good stuff. Good thing you plunged the hinge to get the wedge far enough in there. Stacking those hard head wedges. I have a small quiver of those that have lasted over 15 years. Love ‘em!

Only getting the toothed ones now and they are indestructible even when frozen. Just gradually saw nibbled…

I removed this hanging dead limb this morning. All cut and drop.
The tree is leaning away from the camera, and there's almost nothing on this side. The stub has some foilage, so it'll probably be OK.

Those soft woods can do some funny things. Most common break is either a codominant lead, an overextended lateral, or a torsional force on an upward arching fractal leading to a crack. I’ve definitely seen White Pines in my area with limbs that pulled entirely out of their sockets. All the overlapping branch collar tissue looks like a stepped drill bit at the end of the branch with a perfectly matched hole in the trunk. Not uncommon.

After lunch, I removed the outer portion of this unwanted limb. The high TIP with an offset drop, and some strong-arming got me far enough out to make some cuts with the little saw.
I'm planning to make another climb with the 12" saw to cut some more off the big limb, but not all the way to the trunk. Hopefully the HO will agree. There'll be a short third climb close to the trunk to get the long dead limb and the little live limb below it. It's all good exercise.

Well, I just couldn't get in a comfortable (safety wise) position to make the cut I wanted, but it does look a little better.
And then I was asked to remove this too-close-to-the-house crepe myrtle.
Cutting it down was easy, hauling it to the curb was not so easy.
Three bites with the big clamshell on the yard debris truck oughta do it.

I went up and whacked some trees there by @chiselbit, not as big. Got my butt kicked with brush and backleaners. It was tough...I want a rematch.
More bucket work, 5 uprooted trees and one heavy leaner. All solo, chipping on another day. Felt funny setting and running rigging from the bucket, but you do what you gotta do and it all felt safe. Just found out my old employee wants to come back in about a month, so I've got that going for me. Playing with some GoPros today as well.

Huge red maple we took down this week. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen or worked on this variety before. Just not something we have in this area. Certainly not this size. I think I’d have tried harder to talk them out of removing it if I hadn’t misidentified it as a silver maple when I quoted the work. Thankfully I was able to talk them out of removing the giant elm next to it. They wanted to remove the elm because it dropped a large limb.

I love learning from others on this site. I rarely post and keep a mindset of ears open mouth shut. But I was proud of this one.
Sad to remove the tree but it had already been hacked up years prior and didn’t have much left for a canopy. Austrian pine, ~100 yrs old. 26” dbh but only 50’ tall.
This was a side job that I knocked out Saturday morning with the help of a route setter friend running ropes. Not anything crazy by any means but got it all down bucked and hauled to the road for the city to pick up. I’m always learning and trusting my instincts for what will and will not work.

Tried to minimize the chance of chunks breaking off on impact and sliding down the steep hill to the target.

Also installed a pull rope to help keep it from breaking off into its lean and pull it at a quartering angle off the lay. Then cut, wedge,pull, etc. and a butt tie with some slack
