Tree Work Vehicles

This is my setup 95% of the time. I might tow the trailer with an old F350 if it's a no clean up. Hoping to replace the trailer soon with a 16' enclosed car hauler for the mini and gear. View attachment 95033
Picked up the enclosed trailer today. I'm going to spend a little time getting it set up before I put it to work. 20240828_142701.jpg

That grapple plus trailer is a killer setup. Well done. I want to replicate this but on a tiny scale.
Thank you, it works really well for me.
Just because the equipment is big, doesn't mean it's not on a tiny scale. I'm actually a 1 man show. It allows me to knock out a lot of debris in a hurry with very little effort.

Also, I subcontract debris hauling for other small companies and homeowners who diy and stack the debris out by the road.

There’s a retired ground worker around me who subcontracts similarly, mainly for companies. He does well and can probably do the work as long as he can drive and climb the ladder. Tight setup sir.

I dig that, I'm a one man band myself these days. But I could not practically use a setup that big in many of the places I work, just too big for where I live and the jobs I do. Anyways, great setup! I'm glad that you have found a good niche. I really like working solo, makes life really simple!

A small 4wd cabover flatbed or dump, with a small kboom and bmg/ removeable scoops or similar, and winch would be what is I could use to complement my mini.

Sounds like something similar might do well for you, with/ without the mini.

I wonder if a trailer like this would work for you? A local company has ran this trailer for several years now. Loading logs and brush and even using the grapple arm to feed a chipper. It does require a class a cdl. Im unsure of the GVWR, but its on tandem duallys. 3000lb max lift capacity Screenshot_20240830_180215_Photos.jpg

That's a great little rig! I wonder about sourcing that grapple on it's own, I'd love to have a little grapple like that rear mounted on a smaller flatbed. I thought that you could get one of these units shipped down un mounted but I'm not sure about that after checking again-

Check Brownwood sales in Ohio. There website isn't much... https://www.brownwoodsales.com/

I had talked to them at a trade show several years ago and from what I recall, they were pretty open to customizing anything I wanted. I've thought about those grapple trailers before myself.

"The Magic Chip Truck!"

Daily driven for 3 years with no major issues. 82 international s1724 s series with a 392 6.4L gas motor and two speed rear axel. She's slow but she still shows up to the job on time. No major issues so far. I think it was a utility or DOT truck originally from Oregon and I have converted the 500 gallon water tank into a tool box but i still have an issue stowing all the 8' pole tools somewhere.

Have any old timers seen fleet forestry trucks like this back in the day? I think Gus Schalo with Mt. Index tree service has a very similar truck to me.

I highly recommend thrifting some bull horns for your rigs ~20$usd

Try underneath from rear of truck? Enough room between the frame rails?
If not, give up a small space inside the chip box? Like a narrow rectangular box, mounted up above the "tailgate.''
Or even the same box mounted to the outside of body.

Our ancient international - ‘87 I think? Got it cheap from a landscape guy up in the U.P. Absolutely will not ever go above 55mph for anything. Guy chopped the top off the chip box off which we still complain about regularly. Complete with built-in automatic midsummer Sauna, for when we need it least. The locker is great, but a double edged sword. Can’t get guys to keep it organized in busy times no matter what we do. Two shelves on the left not shown.

18xp on the back. EAB fueled that purchase - there used to be a glorious free dump who would take anything but has become unreliable. We are very lucky to have it, 95% of our material gets chipped.

As you can see here I’m in another league from you guys, but anyway…

This is a prototype test “general purpose bush cart” - although I really liked the generous wheels (from the old drill seeder) they proved too heavy for hilly terrain.

IMG_0060.jpeg

About 4 years ago I developed this beauty and although I wish the wheels were a little more robust it’s nimble and gets the job done with plenty of room for “everything“ including my 562 with a 28” bar, climbing, and or rigging gear, portawinch and bark protectors.

Over the years I’ve added a “ridge pole”, tarp, and retractable kick stand, and it’s proved to be a reliable buddy - though perhaps it’s more of a fun vehicle than a work vehicle as these days I work for health and fun.

EAB through 18xp sounds dusty AF. N95 for jobs?

Funny you say that - my brother runs the ground and would get throat irritation and feel pretty crummy after larger ash jobs. He had been wearing a mask while chipping for awhile apparently. Strangely the 2 year employee said he has no problems, never wears a mask. We just put a few buffs and masks in the chipper toolbox, but indeed it may come down to N95. I haven’t been on the ground at all since coming back and just noticed the effects of the dust the other day - throat felt like I was sucking on a lime pulled out of a septic tank.
