What are some really simple things you all have learned, implemented, or changed your ways about over the years that make things easier?

here’s a small example of what I’m thinking. Today I changed something that I never thought of for some reason, and it’s really no different than what I used to do, but it made the process of adding fuel and oil to my top handle so much easier. All I did was pull the caps in the opposite direction and placing them down on the body of the saw rather than them hanging off the side…

My old way, where the cords pulled the stopper up against the filler hole:


My new way, with the hole un-obscured… somehow makes it so much easier to pour and see what’s happening:

For sure, details are important.

I cut off the cords so the caps won't possibly be contaminated by sawdust from touching the saw body. I wipe clean the name plate label and put the caps there and then wipe the name plate clean after caps are reinstalled.

Right! One of my Stihl caps lost won’t stay plugged into the little groove inside the reservoir, so I always put the cap where you stated. I have to be on good level ground to refuel so I don’t loose the cap or watch it roll off the saw and into the duff. I prefer having the cords, but can get by without them.

I am pretty anal about not letting any dirt or BS into my fluid reservoirs. I wipe around caps every time. Its one thing I especially dislike about most STIHL saws.

I also like to keep my spurs SHARP. I learned that one the hard way, with dull spurs on a dead Italian cypress

Pulling your pants up a bit before cinching up your spur straps. Don’t limit your leg mobility.

Dull em up good before super dead climbs, otherwise you're fighting sinking in too deep.

I switched to Velcro lower straps on my spurs. Makes getting them insanely tight a breeze. Game changer in comfort.

Depends on the species and condition of the wood. On Fir, I didnt realize it last week, but you're right, it was awful. On that italian cypress, it was like climbing a steel pole.

People generally pour with the spout at the low point of the bottle rather than the high point, which reduces/ eliminates glugging.




Oil under-cap foil can be punctured with a pour hole and air hole.





Ratchet straps should be given a half twist in open air spans to prevent vibration/ noise.

I am always amazed how many older guys don't wanna learn about the strap trick, but still complain about the noise. I learned it from a guy that drove semis.

One almost needs 2 types (sharp and duller ((to taste)) depending upon the species and condition. Maybe certain markets aren’t like that, but up in my area for sure. Also, long and short.
