Buckingham Velcro lower spur straps.

So I was looking to replace my lower straps with the buck velcros. I love these and they’ve lasted well….. they now sell straps (almost double the price) with a leather stiffener built in. I cannot figure out what/why/how this feature is beneficial. Wondering if anyone on here has experience with this style strap?

Hmmmm. I had to go and check my spurs. I have both of them. Plain on my tree gaffs and leather pad on my pole gaffs. I wasn't even aware there was a difference in them, so I am guessing it doesn't do much at all or I think I would have noticed. But it could be just me oblivious to things like that. Couldn't tell you what I paid for them, other than they are very expensive for what there is. But I do like them enough to get them, no matter the cost. It probably is just to protect your boot from the metal piece. I can't see any other reason for it.
Maybe I am not seeing something you are. You said stiffener. I just have a leather pad the sits under the metal piece. Could be I am not talking about what you are.

@Shadowscape im not sure of the metal piece you’re referring to….. I asked arbsession, and they felt that it didn’t necessarily “stiffen” the strap but made it more robust, and (possibly?) longer lasting. Either way, I think I’ll stick to the 60$ buckingham Velcro lowers without the buckles or leather stiffener for now.

A slight highjack, by has anyone tried the Spikepod yet? Snowboard binding style lower straps.

I bought them when I was holidaying in the UK a month ago. They are pure shite. Leather gets soft fast. After 6 uses they were stretched and the rachet slipping. Put pressure at pinch point. They used the wrong material. Needs to be hard plastic polymer. FTC is coming out with that style upper and lower on their new gaffs.Screenshot_20230825_070918_Instagram.jpg

What are those dual spikes bolted onto the bottom of the spurs?! Look amazing for traction!!

Went and looked at Arbsession and saw what you are referring to. Had not seen that yet.
No, I was talking about that round leather piece under the return metal loop.
Amazing price jump for that added stiffener. Can't see that it does much other than create some sort of a handle that you don't really need.

I doubt I’ll ever try the spike pod style straps. They look uncomfortable as all hell, and more shitty plastic stuff to get broken. I feel like that area on a climber sees some abuse….
