How do you know you're getting old?

I stick with 1200mg Advil to reduce the swelling from my gout, else I can't walk. Morning and evening so I can sleep as well. Works most days. Some days not so much. Then there are the high blood pressure meds.
Now, if only I remember to take them....

Have you tried the cherry juice for gout?
Yes. I pretty much live on cherry juice and cherries. They have a gout med that I tried once but had a bad reaction to it.
I don't drink, and I stay ay from just about everything they tell you not to eat when you have gout, but I have defied all of it so far. Some days there is no way I can walk, but with a handful of Advil mornings and evenings I can keep the swelling down enough to get my boots on and hobble about. Most of the time. On the down hill side of a round with it now. A few days ago I was restricted to chair duty. If tomorrow is as good as today I have some tree work to get done. Snow is almost gone!

Damn, sorry to hear that. Had some family with gout that wouldn't change their diet and just suffered constantly. Seems pretty rough.
You can't explain it anyone. When I get a bad case, even a bed sheet touching my foot will make me scream in pain. Foot swells up like a football and you think the skin will split open. Not fun at all. I wish I could figure out what triggers it with me. I have followed several doctors lists of what not to eat and drink, and I still get it.
But enough of me and my old, worn out carcass.

I hope you try and at least take the Ibuprofen with food. That stuff will eat a hole in your stomach eventually if you don't. It works but at a cost if you aren't careful.

Have you kept a food journal to try to track correlations?

Strange things happen. Pineapple hurts a friend's shoulders.

Yes. Over the fifteen years or so I have had gout I have tried to keep track of what causes it to flare up. since it is a build up of acid crystals in the joints, one has to go back several days ago in order to figure out what you ate or drank. I have all the lists of things that cause these acid crystals to form, and I have completely avoided them and still it get a flare up. I've given up trying to figure it out. Now I just take handfuls of Advil to keep the swelling down as much as possible and expect to have a few weeks a year where I can't walk.
But lately it is showing up in my right thumb.
Sucks to get old. The "Golden Years" are a myth started by AARP to get you to join. They love to show you a picture of a happy old couple traveling around the country in their RV, getting great discounts. They won't show you the reality of an old person all crippled up sitting in the nursing home. Doesn't sell memberships.

Was the medication you tried called allopurinol? That is the most common gout medication.
Yep. Did something to my blood that scared the doctor and was taken off of it right then and there. Not sure what that was all about, but the doctor was most insistent I do not ever again take Allopurinol.
I tried a different med for it after that, but getting an attack of gout and having it for three or four days before the med kicked in enough to make a difference just didn't seem practical. That is the problem. You have to dissolve the acid crystals. Takes time.

I also get a plumbers crack way too often now, makes me feel old for sure! :ROFLMAO: damn clothes don't fit because I'm gaining and loosing weight all the time.

I've heard the saying that tree work years are like dog years, aging you 7 for every one year you do it. I know that's a bit dramatic and you don't need to kill yourself in the work, especially these days with all the gear and equipment on offer. Nevertheless, I feel older and creakier then I think i should for 35. Proper respect to you older climbers, I don't think I'll make it past 50 in trees at the rate I'm going!

I've been having back problems since I broke it at 16. No fun at all, ive never been in great shape since. I'll be good for a few months but every now and then it just goes out and I'm done for a week or so. Recovery time is longer the older I get. I've been doing some exercises for the last few years that help a lot but I have to do it every day to keep feeling decent.
