Finally broke some stitched eye "dog bones".

Just broke the eye of my needle while trying a different approach, so yeah any needle suggestions would be appreciated. I didn't double up the thread/twine and 1/2 way through my 3rd pass the cord was so tight I could barely force the needle through, and I think it was an appropriate size needle as the 1mm twine/thread just barely fit through the eye.

"Dog bone" is just a term I borrowed from an article describing one method for stitching eyes in rope, and it refers to a short piece of rope with an eye on either end.

I just use them to break-test my sewn eyes or various loop knots. For instance I recently wanted to test the Ampersand Bowline vs. Double Bowline with a Yosemite tie--in 2 tests with 3/8" cord the Double Bowline broke while the Ampersand bowline held and was still easily untied. Not very scientific but it still gives a rough idea which knot is stronger in a given type of rope.

"Dog bones". are typically a short sewn webbing connector between two carabiners used in rock climbing. One side gets connected to the rock anchor, and then the climbing line gets snapped into the other. This offers some extra length and flexibility. This is coming from someone who has never climbed rock (well, with a rope and gear)

You know, in all of my years of climbing rock, I never heard one of those called a “dog bone“. We always called them “quick draws“.

Maybe a regional thing? Who knows, but that is the name I heard and it stuck in my head... Could be very wrong too...

Edit: Just googled "Climbing Dogbone". and what comes up is the naked webbing link in a quickdraw. So I guess the unit complete is a quick draw, but the web link is a dogbone. Like I said I never paid too much attention to rock climbing, so I have no idea where this garbage file in my brain came from.

That’s possible, I have primarily been an East Coast climber. I did a little climbing in Colorado long long ago, but I was quite young then, and I was only out there for about two weeks so I didn’t have enough time to learn the lingo if it was different.

That’s one of those things though, where there probably are 10 different names for it.

In my technical rescue experience, we called short (~15-18") eye-to-eye webbing slings dogbones.
