Like RogerM, those words hit me hard too. We see so many similar tragedies on TV and the movies and think we are supposed to somehow measure up to those cool-headed heroes who are simply acting in a planned and controlled plot, but reality is so different. If you had been heroic, either you would have written your post from a hospital with 3rd degree burns over most of your body, or we would be grieving your tragic death. Don't beat yourself up over that, and don't let survivor's remorse beat you down either. Instead, let me offer congratulations: you are certifiably normal. And you're alive to tell the story. You did all you could do, and, in some tragedies, all you can do is never going to be enough.I had always thought about being a fire fighter, bc I thought I was clutch or "good in the heat of battle", maybe even fearless. I always thought I could save them from anything. I would die for them. I thought I was tough. But that night I was none of those things.
