Question about Stihl MS 261 C-M

Thank you for everyone’s help. I have a question about the letterings around the saw model name. I am not certain with the C-M. I reading that the saw is marked MS 261 C and the owner’s book is marked MS 261 CM. Is this correct? I’m looking at a used saw and I’m hoping to confirm this. Is the lack of a M a deal breaker?

That is probably correct, I don’t believe I’ve ever seen the “M“ written on a saw, whether it is designated with that letter or not. I would not cause that to be a dealbreaker, though you could call your local dealer and give them the serial number to confirm.

If you call the dealer where the saw was originally sold, they can probably give you the service history if there is one, and let you know what date it was purchased new as well.
 
If it’s missing the little tuning screws, you can rest assured it’s an M-Tronic.


Neither one would be a bad saw though. I’ve just grown partial to the M-tronics, though I still got a bunch of regular carb saws.
 
My 261 cm is also marked on the saw as a 261c. Not being a Mtronic isn't a deal breaker, but all of my daily use saws now are mtrornic and work great.

My one issue so far with carbs not running right was earlier this spring when the weather turned hot very fast. Saws ran rough that day until I ran it through the adjustment procedure and it was smooth sailing after that.

I still see a lot of people against the Mtronic saws because they don't trust 'tham new fangled computer thangs' but fact is it's a very well tested and proven system by this point. I've got 4 different Mtronic saws and have had nothing but good experiences with them.
