Show off them splices

Ultrasling....A+!! I don't know how I went so long w/o making myself one lol!!

How heavy / what uses do you have in mind for that single-XL Ultra? I always hear "terminal anchorage has to be >1 ring", but it's spoken like a rule when it's really a principle (ie you're not going to rip a 1/2" bullrope by properly rigging 200lbs logs from a single XL anchor)

Speaking of bend radius stuff....gotta say I'm still surprised at how unpopular thimbles are!! Especially for the "tight eye" E2E slings, where you're basically forcing a 180deg bend (oftentimes with relatively "dense" double braids, where the bending would be more hurtful to the cordage than it'd be to, say, hollow braid cordage), surprises the hell out of me that thimbles aren't the norm....presumably it's an aesthetic thing? I dunno, to me they look better with the thimbles in, but that wouldn't matter I'd go w/ whatever was going to be stronger, would love to see some break-test comparisons between what I default to:

versus what I consider optimal:
View attachment 71528 (1/2" steel rope thimble, heavy duty type on the ice tail in the foreground and regular variety on the blue moon behind it, these are a buck or a couple bucks)

I've heard bend radius proportions from 4X the rope's diameter, to 10X....but, obviously, the difference from 1X to 2X is a bigger difference than 4X to 5X, so in that spirit I've always seen thimbles as being important because they're fighting such extreme bend radiuses(radii? can't spell :p )
Thanks, eyeheart. I dont have a specific use for it. I just had a ring already, and a length of tenex from a treestuff rope grab bag so thought id give it a try. Ive not done much splicing, but this 12 strand is sure a lot easier than 16 strand or double braid!

First eye and eye :)
I love 5/16” Ultratech, and Wesspur had 25’ pieces for 20$ in their clearance section a couple months back.
One eye is a teensy bit tighter than the other, but I’m still very happy with the results. 30” long. AE3D26B6-65F3-4008-A48F-26679448B6B2.jpeg
My liquid whip rope dip stuff should be delivered tomorrow, then it’ll be ready to go to work.

Here's a few recent splices. I just started splicing again for the first time in about 11 years

Nice tapers, if you have been away from splicing that long, you might not be aware of Teufelberger’s Splife skinny splices.

I just downloaded them today. I need a better understanding of rope material and construction to feel confident in what splice to utilize on which ropes. Like can those splices be performed on other ropes or only those?

Of course Teufelberger only recommends their particular ropes be used. In their certification program samples are sent in and run through a scanner that checks the diameters at certain lengths to make sure tapers, crossover, etc. are done correctly.

Of course. Haha but theoretically...

Not a splice, hope you guys don't mind looking at my wares anyhow... Made up 2 of these today, xmas gifts for the guys at work. 2 minutes to tie, 45 minutes to sew together. 56" usable length, ISC steel rings, cost me $10 worth of cordage & rope in total to build the pair after I scored all the rings free from treestuff! 20201129_182451.jpg

That’ll work and retrieve just as well as any spliced friction saver, I’d trust it. What’s the rope? Looks like Hyper Climb.

DC3CE8CF-87BA-4FD5-A461-5CDA022E5D24.jpegNot terrible for my third attempt. Two last night were pretty bad but I was a bit intoxicated. Just playing with scraps for a bit. Been two years since I took the Fids and fibers class. I know I mucked up the eye size a bit and my crossover is prolly a bit off

Well I been sick and not working for a while. Got bored and decided to try my hand at splicing. Of course the only thing I had to splice was throw line. Used 1.75 mm throwline was quite the chore. Started with a broke off section. Then went ahead and did the new 180 ft hank of 2.2 mil. Both were of the treestuff branded variety. Can't wait to get a bag of rope and practice with the big stuff.

I decided to try putting eye splices in two of my throwline. All four of my throwlines are hollow braid, so I did locking brummels. It worked, but burying the tails was a PITA. I would like to try it on my other two throwlines, but they are even skinnier. I don't know what brand/type of throwlines I have. Any tricks for burying the tails? Anybody recognize the throwlines?

I use a carpet needle when splicing throw line, not needed for the brummels (but helpful) but it makes the burry easy, bunch up the line just as it's going onto the needle. I don't do eyes, just triple brummel pieces together to make longer lines.

1.8mm yellow w/ black is Notch, Idk the others.

Not to sure but the orange looks like aculine. The yellow I don’t believe to be zing it. Looks to heavy for that. Not sure on any of them really
