Been here much more than a while

Our grapple bolt that holds the grapple to the u shaped knuckle has came loose twice
It’s where the grapple rotates

1st time we just tightened back up and 6 weeks later has almost came off

This time we put blue locktight on it

Just thankful someone noticed it before someone got hurt or feeding the chipper and it come off and go through the chipper

has this happened to anyone else?
Never had any issues and all of sudden twice in 2 months
Had thoughts of putting a castle nut and bolt so a pin would not allow the nut to come loose

What kind of nut holds that on, is it a nylon locknut? If so, try a good quality steel locknut. They hold better. Also, locknuts are one-time-use (contrary to popular belief) so if you take one off a bolt you should replace it with a new one.

It’s not a nylon nut but not a normal either

I was going to replace but the top was worn enough not able to read what grade it is and I wouldn’t want to change the grade of the bolt

If it comes loose again I will replace great idea
I will call bmg and ask the to sell me one or give me a description for it
They are a great company just sent me a hydraulic coupler for free I couldn’t believe it even offered to pay but they told me Happy Holidays
5 star operation

I had a bolt the would always work loose but after 1300 hours of use first. So I put a tack weld on it but small enough that 30 seconds with a grinder will undo it easily enough.
Well at least it’s not just me
Do you think a nylon nut or a castle nut and bolt would work?

I'll have to go out and look to confirm, but I believe I inspected that bolt one time knowing that it could unthread (read about it in other post) and found a tack weld there from factory. I've had my grapple 2 years now and the only thing to work loose is one of the 4 bolts on the jaws of the grapple.

Since disassembly and reassembly after replacing the hydraulic hoses I've not had those bolts work loose either.

Just checked. The nut does have a tack weld on it. With limited access I don't think you'd ever cut the weld with an angle grinder. If you ever needed to remove it, it'd probably be best to cut the bolt with an acetylene torch and replace the hardware.
