Friction device

Does anyone make or use there own port-a-wrap type devices. I’ve seen different styles over the years and obviously there’s patents etc.
But someone the other day said hey bring me yours and my buddy can make a handful of them cheaper, hmmm.

I know the ones we buy are tested and approved etc but how does that work

A handful of cheap porta wraps made by some guys buddy sounds like a shit idea. They aren't very expensive in the first place. Is the guys buddy going to cover your losses if it fails? Raise the children of the people who die if it fails? Not that they would probably want that, just saying. As others said to me when pointing out stupid things I was doing or concidering, not to be an ass.

I've heard of a POW crushed, but never broken. Dyneema rope with a forwarder. Confidence!

They had one custom built like you would want a young-back to carry. Logging is different.

Otherwise, off-the-shelf, or place an ISO ad on TREEbay.

Can't upload my pic. I have a bollard type lowering device that straps to the tree. A friend who's a pro welder/ fabricator built it.
Last year I bolted a small trailer winch to the side of it for pretension and lifting under 600lbs, alot like the winch on the Stein 3001

There it is, before the winch.
The I beam was machined to make room for the bollard, the bollard was beveled to allow a full penetration weld, he called it a " root pass" . It's definitely built well and works great.
I'd be interested in knowing what kinda weight/ force it'd take to break it. Could always have him make a new one.

It gets strapped to the tree w a 10k ratchet strap. I cut the hooks off the strap and replaced them with 50kn steel biners.

There are dozens of YouTube videos of all sorts of them, big and small. I've never heard of one breaking, but the ones I have were welded by my younger brother, who's been a welder for about 40 years. They are the larger, fixed bollard type.

I rarely use them, anymore. I have a couple of the Stein POW type, which are well made.

Has anyone ever had ANY welding or fabricating done? I sure had lots done by properly trained and certified weldors. No failures.

Just like treework there are places where it's professional only. Find a good weldor not just someone who can melt metal.
Yes and bosses buddy runs a metal fabrication shop and does nice work from what I’ve seen I’m sure he’s never done these though

He works as a millwright now. On a project rebuilding a nuclear power plant in Canada

I use one that I built, it does its job and I haven't had any issues with it. Its modeled after the common porta wrap, although the barrel is a little smaller diameter than I would make it if I were to rebuild it.

One feature I do like about mine is that the bottom side for the sling tapers slightly with the larger end being at the barrel and barely fits over a trailer ball. This means that I can mount it on the back of a truck for pulling or a quick anchor and when it gets loaded it is "locked" onto the ball because of the taper getting smaller on that end.
