Rope/Prusik recommendations.

I am getting back into tree climbing. Used to love climbing.Climbed full time for 10 years, started my own business had that for 5 years and somewhere along the line it went from something I looked forward to doing to just a business.Sold the company and after a couple years getting the itch again and looking to buy a new climb line. I have an old ZIGZAG mechanical prusik from when I climbed full time. Probably 4 years old now.Ive moved to Pennsylvania from Colorado and seems I’m going to have to climb in the rain if I want to work more than a day a week.Any recommendations on a low stretch good 1/2” ish rope that will work decent when in wet conditions. Also I’ve only climbed a few times in the last couple years. ZIGZAG still be good or should I replace as a safety precaution? It was used hard for 2 years. Also will the ZIGZAG be any good for wet conditions or is there something that would be better?

Welcome man. Sounds similar to my story. Full time for almost 10 years then a 10 year break. Climbing systems changed alot while I was away.

I seem to remember talk of a part breaking on early model zigzags. 1st or 2nd generation. A link or something was fracturing? I'm really unfamiliar with the device. @JeffGu has a few of them I think, and some are replacements that Petzl sent him. Hopefully he'll chime in. Inspect it and pay close attention to the links.

What's the serial number on the zig zag or what year was it made...its the first numbers in the SN

I believe that's the 2014 v2 so I think your good. I still have one in use. Inspect it and keep an eye on the links for cracks

I think the 1st generation didn’t have the hard piece of rubber in it to hold the carabiner in place. On the first model carabiner turned sideways I think.I got mine after they added that. I generally have always waited a year or so before buying any first ever product like that.

Ya that's the version they made after the recall, your good

If you really want that zigzag to sing, I would consider an 11.7mm rope like poison ivy/blue moon or tachyon. They're a little harder on your hands, but if you add a rope walking option to your climbing system, like a knee ascender and foot ascender combo, it won't matter. The slightly smaller diameter really makes a big difference in slack tending and ease of release, and it's way easier to install in the friction links. I also love a zigzag in a ring and ring friction saver or a pulley.

Also, look into SRT with a rope wrench, super smooth w/ a zigzag, and I don't buy any compatibility issues now that they're releasing the chicane. It's pretty easy to switch back and forth between Ddrt and SRT. I use my wrench on a regular length tether installed on the bottom biner that goes to my bridge.

South of Harrisburg... Near Gettysburg. What climb line do you use ?
I'm primarily using scandere with a bulldog bone and I love it. Some times I switch out to a bit of km3 max that I have. I have used the bulldog bone for everything I do since I got it about 6 months ago. I can't even make an excuse not to use it it just works so well for everything I do.

@Treehead36; Welcome to the TreeBuzz forum! I think you are going to like it here! Congratulations on making your first posts, and feel free to keep jumping in! Be sure to try out using this forum's search utility; there are years worth of old threads just waiting to be discovered and revived.

@surveyor is the member to try to send a private message to if you wish to buy a Compact Adjustable Bulldog Bone, which I believe can be used for DdRT or SRT climbing. It is his invention, and he's the only source to buy a new one, to the best of my knowledge. He provides great service, by all accounts. I push his device all the time just because he is a rather reserved and nice gentleman who does not like to push it much himself. It is used all over the world, just like the Rope Wrench.

Some folks are really die-hard fans of the Zig Zag, too, though.

Welcome aboard, again.

Tim
