Cord vs Rope terminology

I think in today's world the term denotes it's intended use more than its construction. In olden times when sailing ships were the kings of rope work, they only had Hemp, Jute and manila twisted strand ropes. Most of them were much larger in diameter than we now need using modern textiles and construction. Some people refer to wire rope as cable? right or wrong at least you know what they are referring to. Think of the strength we can achieve in a 1 inch rope ( Endura ) now, 70,000 lb breaking strength! That's awesome! you can lift a large excavator off the ground! Things in the world of ropes has really changed and so has terminology.
