Caution Treestuff lag bolts

Just a heads up, was installing a cable yesterday which I rarely do and as Robby was screwing in this 5/8" lag it snapped from the torque of screwing it. Lags were purchased from Treestuff right before the merge with Sherrill so don't know if they had already got some of the Chinese crap that Sherrill is famous for but be careful. I almost feel like going back and replacing all the lags we've installed with quality sourced ones as lags failing and leads breaking out could be a huge liability.

Paul, This is a totally baseless accusation not at all rooted in fact. We continue to sell the same bolts we always have.

I'm sorry you feel so slighted for no reason, I really am, but this is neither truthful nor stated in good faith.

What is not true Nick?? The fact that the bolt that you sold me broke or that Sherrill has a penchant for sourcing sub par products from China??

Nick you say I feel slighted for no reason by Sherrill. Do you want me to lay out a list of all my reasons??

I for one find it very amusing the way you used to rail against them and now you are a staunch advocate, oh yeah they cut your pay check now

@ Paul - any idea of how many/few foot pounds of torque it took to snap that bolt? I'm kinda curious. And whether a standard lag spinner was being used to screw it in, or something longer?

We were using an 18" spinner, same as we always have, same procedure as always. Guess this is kinda the same deal as the alternator I put in my dodge pickup last weekend, brand new from nappa, dead. Nappa replaced it no questions asked instead of accusing me of being dishonest. At some point we need to stop buying shit from China.

As to the torque I'm gonna make a wild guess say 50 pounds of force on an 18" bar so 75 foot pounds??

Keep it up @bonner1040 douche bag reply to valid concern. You want to be
right or do you want to provide excellent customer service. you are right in tune with Sherrill malarky:fuckyou:

75 ft.lbs seems like a low number (to my layman's brain) to be snapping a 5/8" dia. lag. It obviously ain't your first rodeo, so I reckon my j-lag inventory will keep collecting dust in the basement.

"There are no published specifications for the amount of torque required when turning the head of a lag screw."

Hey @bonner1040 why not have pctree ship back the remains of that lag to have your supplier look at it? That way they can determine if there was a defect in the material or workmanship? I think it would be good to know for yourself and to be able to address the concern. DMM did that with my block and provided reported their findings to me. I was impressed to say the least that they immediately took it upon themselves to assess the product before drawing any conclusions.

That would be the care I would expect from @TreeStuff. Looking out for their customers and all. Who knows there might be a defect in a batch that Paul has found. How would any of us know unless our suppliers stood behind their products and investigated the problem and went as far as the manufacturer.

That's all it takes… When lives hang in the balance it's the least that needs to be done.

@treehumper, bonner as a member of Sherrill Corporation has no interest in the safety of us mere workers so wants to sweep any issues under the rug by the cheapest means whatsoever. First he tried to merely state " This is a totally baseless accusation not at all rooted in fact" now he is sending me a $5 lag and will keep on selling products that make them the largest profit.

Did anybody else notice how he didn't ask me to list my grievances with Sherrill? He knows many of them.

It's not just the lives of me and you either. It's our clientele and our family's. What would happen if there was a failure that killed someone? Would we have a Kong ring situation again? Everyone pointing fingers? And the tree company owner left holding the bag! No thank you.

While understanding the concern over potentially faulty hardware, or instillation practices, am I the only one that hasn't worked for someone that "guarantees" cabeling/brace rods?

The company I work for now as well as the two I started with, both advise that it's to help, but is certainly not a cure all nor to guarantee that the crotch won't still fail. Only they put it more eloquently so it sounds good and still sells, but it's not guaranteed to not eventually fail.

That said, why lag bolts? I'm an eyebolt, thimble and dead end grip guy myself even though the company I work for now doesn't do that.

Interesting, this whole thing is interesting to me. I am curious to see what unfolds in the future. @bonner1040 I don't think you would of reacted this way a year ago. Why the change. You seam a little stressed. Everything all right?

Mate, it's a bummer this has happened to you. However, you cannot expect Nick to want to help you in any way when you come on a public forum like this and start company bashing. Next time, bring your concerns to directly to those involved and I'm sure it will work out in your favor.
