Yikes!

how do they know it's 150 years old? Also, they are proud to be cutting it down. I think the other way. How can I keep this big ol tree alive!!

Uses the ape hanger position while cutting aloft. One hand on the saw the other on his climb line. I just don't get that when you can set up easily with your lanyard and use both hands....

Um, no not just for looks but because it is required by law. They are working overhead. No chaps or chainsaw protection, no PPE for that matter. This is the sort of sh$t that keeps our industry in the high end of insurance rates. When one of them gets whacked then we all pay. What do I see, lack of professionalism and respect for the industry.

Let's rewind. Many accidents happen to people working to the letter of the law or attempting to. Many more to improperly equipped and untrained. Most of those are not recorded. Too bad it would change the game if every tree work injury, amatuer or pro was recorded. On that day in this video the helmets would of been just to look legal and no other benefit. They sure are nice when they're needed and happen to already be on.

I did a head bonk mountain biking on Van Ilse. with a proper helmet on. Got up shook myself off and have been happily wearing a helmet every chance I get since.

Riding bikes is one thing...nobody is paying you for that and you're free to do as you will. When you work for a client, in my opinion, and by law in some cases, you should do everything you can to follow the rules, make sure you're safe, the job is safe, and everyone/everything in the vicinity is safe.

Those guys had some skill for sure and could be on their way to being fantastic arborists. But they'll never be there in my eyes without taking every precaution they can to make it home to their family at the end of the day. In that video they fell way short of that.

We had one of our crew trip and fall back hitting his helmeted head on a low rock wall. Earlier I had told him to get a helmet on and wear it properly. It was a Petzl climbing helmet. Without that he would've at the least had a concussion. In our business there is never a time helmets are not needed.
