That guy seems to have a natural enthusiasm for treeclimbing, this is the most important trait of a good climber. I really dont see how he can be described as a 'professional hack'.

I also think it's notable, Josh, that you are posting this video. Barely six months ago, you were basically spiking every tree you climbed. You were also telling everyone how great you were and that you were a certified arborist.

I though you Jesus freaks were supposed to be humble or meek or something like that.

I'd bet that this "hack" could out-produce you any day.

With some mentoring, that guy could be a real asset to our industry.

I tell you a little story Josh that I am not ashamed of. Three years ago at 41 yrs of age I started working in trees as a way to make extra money in my garden business, at the encouragement of my friend. However he gave me his spikes and showed me a tautline hitch and lent me a hank of blue streak. Then I bought my own equipment. That's how I began. One year later after buying all the climbing and pruning books I could get my hands on " The Tree Climber's Companion " by Jeff Jepson being the first, I began to evolve, ditching the spikes ( now used only on removals ) and introducing the VT and micromouse, Helmets, velocity and tachyon, throw line and big shot ,blocks and slings, then came the hitchclimber and spliced ropes and prussics. Josh can you see the pattern here. That gentleman is probably new to this world of treework and is very enthusiastic as I am sure we all are, he is just showing others what he was taught. Just give him a chance he will evolve believe me.I always had good knowledge about correct pruning and basic chainsaw use from my gardening trade so I just read everything about trees and I am still reading and learning which I will do till I die. You see I only did in the beginning what my friend taught me, however when I began thinking that the work could be done differently I started researching alternatives. I am now about to embark on some more change with the introduction of the rope wrench and an upgrade in saddle from the sequoia to the treemotion by the end of the xmas holidays. We must offer other's our encouragement and help them grow in order for our industry to grow, not put them down and discourage them. These are traits that you gain from experience and watching how the leaders carry themselves ( Mark Crisholm, Tom Dunlap, Jerry Berenek, and of coarse members of the treebuzz community, too many names to call ). Look at the picture of a prune I did in the beginning times, I have come a long way since then and I still have a long way to go . We never stop learning. The picture shows spikes on a prune and no helmet at least this dude is wearing a helmet, I am sure I was making a bundle of mistakes but we have to start somewhere. Long winded but I hope you get my drift. Paul.

Amen.

Oh yeah Josh and next year will be my first year doing tree's exclusively ( well I will keep a few of my old faithful garden jobs that have been good to me ) due to the amount of work I have picked up by emulating the high standards I have learnt from this forum. I will not be looking back . And what Grover said is 100% correct. Paul.

You're acting like an immature idiot josh; please think of the cause of Christ every time you trash talk someone. This is from: The Evil Tongue by: Thomas Watson (1620-1686) .......6. The evil tongue is the slanderous tongue, "Thou sittest and slanderest thy own mother's son" (Psalm 50:20). Slandering is when we speak to the prejudice of another, and speak that which is not true. Worth and eminency are commonly blasted by slander; holiness itself is no shield from slander: "John the Baptist came neither eating nor drinking, yet they say he hath a devil" (Matthew 11:18). Come and let us smite him with the tongue. A slanderer wounds another's name, and no physician can heal these wounds. The sword doth not make so deep a wound as the tongue. The Greek word for slanderer, signifies devil. Some think it is no great matter to belie and defame another; but know, this is to act the part of a devil. The slanderer's tongue is a two-edged sword, it wounds two at once; while the slanderer wounds another in his name, he wounds himself in his conscience. This is contrary to Scripture, "Speak not evil one of another" (James 4:11). God takes this ill at our hands, to speak evil of others, especially such as are eminently holy, and help to bear up the honour of religion: "Were ye not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?" (Numbers 12:8). What! My servant who has wrought so many miracles—whom I have spoken with in the mount face to face—were not ye afraid to speak against him? So will God say, You must take heed of this, it is a sin your nature is very prone to; and remember, it is no less sin to rob another of his good name, than to steal his goods or wares out of his shop.......

Yesterday I was at the warehouse where I have my workshop. Its in the back of a tree buddies place. Some of the florescent bulbs weren't working so I got out my extension ladder to change bulbs. As i was shuffling the ladder around I was reminded of a couple of ladder accidents I had many years ago. At the time throwlines weren't heard of...other than the Johnny Ball which no one that I know of ever used. As I was reminiscing I thought about the isolation that I worked in for many years. At some time I started going to local arbo workshops. That was eye-opening! Great camaraderie and willingness to help each other in a non-competitive way.

At the first comp I went to I saw a family walk by. Little fella toddling along next to Dad. Mom holding the hand of daughter. Dad had his gear slung over his shoulder and was heading to the work climb. What caught my ear was a jingle...there...on his foot! A home made foot ascender! I had just read ON ROPE and was going to make one myself. At that moment I said to myself...I need to know that guy! After his climb I introduced myself. the rest is history. That was Jeff Jepson. Now, his daughter is in college, son is graduating high school and is an accomplished blacksmith. Jeff has written a couple of pretty good books.

Using the communication tools that are at our fingertips shrinks the world. It also expands it out to people working in isolation. Working in small, remote cities or even islands where there are few, or no, progressive climbers to learn with/from is a huge challenge. But!!! We're here, carrying on a conversation around the world.

Break the isolation...reach out!

Well quoted Jeff I believe the tongue to be the most dangerous part of the body. I have to reprimand myself ( and ask God's forgiveness ) often when I speak without thinking how it will affect another. And I am 44. Paul.

This is why I like Treebuzz. The fact that this did not devolve into a useless pissing contest, but leaned towards a learning environment without too much pretense. Rock on.

Everybody at work still refers to our throwbags as "Johnny Balls"...when I started, I had no idea what the heck they were talking about...It makes me smile now though...I wonder how long the term will live on...

My derail is over now.

I like that guy's attitude a lot, he's enthusiastic and is making an effort to share what he knows in a helpful manner.

I couldn't agree more. Maybe there are some Buzzards in his area that could help educate him more. The kid is obviously really into it and that is the most important thing.
