Whats your favorite block?

Re: Whats you favorite block?

I have 2 basic blocks. My first is

My second is

I like the second much more with the knob, and the wider cheek plates, though it is a little heavier. Seems less likely to have the block pinch the rope against the tree. The knob is easier with gloves on, though protrudes more than the little handle.

There are much fancier blocks on the marker, like the ISC, so I'm just commenting on the experience that I have.

I would say that what work you accomplish with your block is more important than having the fanciest block around.

Their is great, and there is good enough to get the job done safely and efficiently.

Re: Whats you favorite block?

When money is tight and you are just starting out, learning tricks will greatly help out on becoming a true rigger. Dont forget the small things in your bag that you might already have. Prussic cord and a biener are the same as a pulley. Mountain climbers use this method all the time in order to cut down on climbing weight.

Re: Whats you favorite block?

I have the same combos as posted. Munter hitch work wonders at times of simply rigging solutions that are fast and effective. One time I used a rescue eight to to help out with load wieght and control. Like climbing low and slow set up some simple rigging solutions to practice and then you have a couple tricks up your sleeve. Pan back a couple pages of threads and there is a rigging crane system that got alot of raves.

Re: Whats you favorite block?

I as well like the ISC blocks and have 3 of them. 2 - 5/8" and 1 - 3/4". I like the simplicity of changing out slings. The CMI SS blocks with the knob are nice too. But have not needed the extra strength to buy one yet. I like to keep my rigging WELL within the WLL of my GRCS and 9/16" SB.

Re: Whats you favorite block?

If I am setting a block 100 feet up a tree, every ounce counts. I would choose the ISC blocks everytime. I've had the knobs lock up on a few of the CMI stainless blocks which was a pain.

Re: Whats you favorite block?

Oh ya nothing wrong with ISC, I wouldn't mind trying on of the stainless ones though. But a few years back, I was at least 75 ft. and about crashed a house with a 30 ft Hickory limb using one of the CMI Steel blocks. It was right beneath my feet and came loose. Don't get me wrong I could have over loaded it, but I am sure it came unscrewed,(put me on the same tree today and I would do it diferantly) so SPRING LOADED ALL THE WAY.

And not to mention, can't put a price on assuraty! They pay for them self's fast.

Re: Whats you favorite block?

Did you get your 2010 Sherrill catalog yet. The ISC blocks have colored sheaves. Too cool. Did I mention it's me on the cover?!

I am waitin for my new sherrill tree catalog to get to me. I should have it in within a few days. I made the request for the catalog last week so I hope I get it tomorrow.

Re: Whats you favorite block?

I already told the story on treebuzz I shouldn't of mentioned it again. But since I did, I got the cover because my girlfriend is an awesome commercial photographer. As well as the fact I'm a famous supermodel, just kidding. You can't tell but I'm wearing a helmet, safety glasses, and steel toed boots. I have a friction saver on the tree so I'm all good except for the flood pants. The photo was seen on treebuzz. There is some influential people of arboriculture involved here that don't seem to mind mixing with us rookies.

Re: Whats you favorite block?

Donald,
I agree with Chris on the Hobbs, it is an intense block. SWL of 8000 lbs - ISC can't hold a candle to that - or am I wrong? I couldn't find any information on really high-strength ISC blocks.

By the way, I own one of those 2-ton steel ISC blocks as well, and it just dropped a bunch of pegs in my book yesterday when it cut my climbing line splice. Tied in twice, other lanyard was above the block, wondered if the red block Nick pictured would have done the same thing with it's blunt corners.

I'm with Nick and Chris - I like the red block, we use one at work, and I have a Hobbs for my own biz. Then again, all blocks have their place, even this sharp ISC.
