What's this? And will penicillin take care of it?

Climacodon septentrionalis

That's a neat one in that the underside of the brackets are little cylindrical teeth. The fertile layer that produces the basidiospores are formed on the surface of the teeth, rather than lining pores or gills.

And that is where you find it, on forks or on old pruning wounds, particularly on flush cuts. The column of decay is likely to be extensive, it takes a pretty vigorous thallus or mycelial network to produce such large conks. Also, I've always seen it head high or higher on the stem. Older texts would call that a "heartrot" fungus. Yes, the tree species does help. Usually, by far, on sugar maple.

Thanks, I just thought it was pretty.

Very pretty, especially the way the light hit the undersides with the teeth. Nice image!

Too bad if that other math kills the tree, and the owner's pocketbook, and the landscape. The height and depth of the decay column is much less of a structural issue than its width, and even that is typically exaggerated. Preservation work pays, for the life of the tree, or thee.

Good luck with the college fund; I just gave another $7k to ours.

ive never cabled a soft maple dont like the dynamic bracing cause noone ever pays for the maintaince on them is it economicly feasable to save the tree but then again its job security if u try to hang on to it maybe structural reduction if too much decay i hug healthy and sick trees
