That's a neat one in that the underside of the brackets are little cylindrical teeth. The fertile layer that produces the basidiospores are formed on the surface of the teeth, rather than lining pores or gills.
And that is where you find it, on forks or on old pruning wounds, particularly on flush cuts. The column of decay is likely to be extensive, it takes a pretty vigorous thallus or mycelial network to produce such large conks. Also, I've always seen it head high or higher on the stem. Older texts would call that a "heartrot" fungus. Yes, the tree species does help. Usually, by far, on sugar maple.
