what helment do you guys recommend. almost got hit in head with saw while in tree

That’s a hard question to answer. There are many good hard hats on the market, personally I like the Petzl Alveo Vent, but have friends who wear Kask or Protos hats.

My best recommendation is to choose one, approved by ANSI for the type of work you do, and within your budget. If you’re not sure which one to pick, go to an arborist supply and ask the staff for help, or call one the Gap Arborist Supply has a good staff that can help you for sure.

Another suggestion which will help us to never use your saw above chest level. That will greatly reduce the likelihood of your hitting yourself in the head with a saw, and reduces the chances of a limb hitting you in the head or chest as well.

Think carefully about all the problems you want your helmet to protect you against, and the overall conditions in which you work. Don't go cheap on a helmet. My advice has always been "Don't choose a $50 helmet, unless you're only protecting a $50 brain."

Petzl vertex vent was my favorite for years. Moved to a kask after that and couldn't stand it. I have a tiny head so that was part of the issue. Now in a protos and as large and goofy as they are, I wouldnt go to anything else from here on out. Unless something new hits the market. As above said, dont get the cheapest, but get the best. Spending the money on a comfy helmet will ensure you arent dreading putting it on.

I just read the other thread as well so I will add that I have a friend in New Zealand who was working some brushing projects. He got complacent and got a bad kickback and his 462 hit him directly in the middle of the front of his helmet. About knocked him out and saw landed a good 10 feet from him. Helmet was cracked but he was unscathed (minus his pride a little I'm sure). That was in a protos helmet.

I have a kask and a petzl vent, I wear the kask >90% of the time, the petzl only gets used at the days second job if the kask got too sweaty to put back on at the start of another climb. I don't dislike the petzl but simply for the space savings in the truck I've been thinking about leaving it home and buying a couple backup sets of kask pads to serve the same purpose.

I agree with the above opinions to try them all on before you buy to see what feels best, any of the 3 (kask, petzl protos) will serve you well!

Personally I'm a fan of my Pacific Kevlar helmet. It's got some heft and no vents, but it gives nearly bomb proof protection to my gourd. Every helmet seems burdensome until you acclimate to it, so I acclimated to Florida work conditions in my Pacific.

I am currently using, and would recommend, the new 3M SecureFit X5000 series. Super comfortable, compatible with ear and eye pro, and doesn't break the bank. Got mine from arbsession.

I use both the vertex best and strato from petzl. Great helmets, the vertex is suspension where the strato is foam. I think I like the fit of the vertex slightly more but I believe I read that foam filled is slightly better safety rating?

I got one of those 3M ones too, had a sharp bit of flashing inside that kinda hurt. Some neat pop up safety glasses on it though. Love the Kask Super Plasma and Petzl Alveo vent with Visor. Think there’s a new Kask Zenith around here somewhere too. More helmets than brains.
