Vertical Rig'em & Roll..."eucman style"

Vertical Rig\'em & Roll...\"eucman style\"

I just got my R&R grapple last week! I'm amazed by the thing! I was trying to figure out a quick way to make occasional vertical picks with the R&R. After some brainstorming & looking only at materials i had laying around the garage, i went simple.

The: ropes, friction hitches, quick links, etc. are just for positioning the grapple to ALMOST vertical. Once you close the grapple, the R&R goes to whatever angle the stem is.

Enough playing around at the yard! Where is a small tree with no targets below? Ah, an old topped elm with lots of vertical old watersprout regrowth.

It was too easy to grab these. Once i grabbed the stems out over the yard (nothing under them- could've been dropped), the ones over the house were next.

I put a tagline one the butt end to control swing. Since this was the first tree where i used it vertically, i took small picks to get a feel for it.

That's pretty awesome, Mike. You'd a thunk they woulda designed a bracket for it to operate horizontally already, eh?!

So the positioning ropes are not actually holding any weight? I'd like to see another shot of the setup. Very cool looking, and one of the things about the R&R that I haven't liked is the inability to pick vertically.

Re: Vertical Rig\'em & Roll...\"eucman style\"

I didn't the positioners to carry the weight. So, i used friction hitches that would slip under heavy loads. In this case michoacan w/ only 3-4 wraps (just enough to position the 400-500 lb grapple)

Re: Vertical Rig\'em & Roll...\"eucman style\"

As the piece is laid down flat, the Michoacan friction hitch (excellent climbing hitch IMHO) slips to take tension off the positioner slings. On a side note: Big Thank You to Mark Adams for the article featuring the Michoacan! AND to Martin Morales for inventing it! I'll try to post some stuff soon!

Hey NB, MB, & EP, How are you guys doing? Yeah MB, the next R&R is going to have a tilt option! Yes Easy, the positioners do hold a little weight, but just until the friction hitches slip. Even if the they broke, the piece would not drop & would NOT even TILT! The R&R swings freely on cable so it swings to whatever the piece is balanced out at.
