Vert Mulch Vid

Nice vid Mike..
I think it would be a little more inviting if you talked on camera, rather than use voice over. Also a little more explanation of soil compaction in suburban environments would make a better case for its value... AND there has to be a better way to fill those holes eh? Do you ever do any radial trenching?

We talked about getting the product into the holes better. We didn't get much further than a large funnel on a 5 gal bucket. Then you still have to make sure there isn't any extra room in the holes and the holes are open enough for the funnel to fit. Maybe an on off function, who know where this will lead. At what point do you go backwards with innovation?

I've got 17 chickens for our daily egg consumption. Instead of hay, we lay down mulch inside their coop (it's free). So, we clean out the coop once per week. We basically get "Poopy Chicken Mulch" as a bi-product

Anyone think it would do well commercially? I'm thinking of trying it on my 10" DBH Black Walnut this Spring.

Nice video mike.
Jamin I would compost that for a year or so, turning the pile periodically. But chicken poop is one of the best natural ferts out there.

True. I'll prolly do just that.

I would guess the holes could be filled more easily if you made a thick slurry, say thicker than good chili con corne. I must be hungry again

. Could be mixed in a wheelbarrow like concrete then use a bulb planter to grab a fist full to insert into holes.

Never tried it just thinking out loud.

I like top dressing the best, cover more area.

They make a tool that fills these holes. Its called the Lynsky tree feeder. It costs like 350 bucks! Actually the hand method isn't all that bad. You have to push the hole down anyhow to make sure its filled so its not all that redundant.

As far as the backfill mix, I use a granular compound that consists of various ground meals, kelp, worm castings and humates. I have top dressed sites as well as a more basic and cheaper form of soil amending. Vertical mulching gets the material where it needs to be on mass and quicker. I don't do that much radial trenching as it is cost prohibitive and time consuming. Im not against using it but haven't had too many customers want to spend the extra dough to make it happen. Generally we will soil drench or root feed these sites twice annual with compost teas/liquid humates after the process.

Jamin, chicken poop is one of the most common additives in most granular organic fertilizers.

I have done this method for years but w an earth auger...ive tried eveything to fill the holes. a 2 litre pepsi bottle turned upside down and cut the bottom off. you put your hand over the hole and move it away when you want to fill a hole...the vert mulch runs right in....primitive but affective!!
THOUGHTS:
I took a class once and told the procter that i did this method.....he seemed to think that in did not change enough of the soil structure to really make a differance. He stated that considering the over all cubic footage of the soil beneath the canopy....even several hundred hole ( although conceptually a great idea) simply was not nearly enough.....then i mentioned radial trenching!!?? still not enough.....he said the root invigoration waas really the only process that made a serious impact...
That kind of bursted my buble a bit since i had been doingthe vertimulch!!!!

I usually add vermiculite to my mix, thinking that the expansion/contraction will help slowly affect a larger portion of the soil. Does this make sense???
