Used Rope

Steve Connally

Been here much more than a while
I've been holding on to all my old climbing line for a while now with the intention of making something. So far I have made nothing but a place for spiders to nest in my garage. I have over 1000' of cougar and am not so sure what to do with it. Do you guys know of anyone, or any organizations that looks for used climbing lines? Some of it is in pretty decent shape. I could cut some bad spots out and it would still be good for climbing, but others, not so much.

I also have 100' of vintage sisal 3 strand that came out of an elderly customers garage. Looks like it's never been used and the ends are whipped. Would make a nice display piece if you showcased old arborist gear somewhere.

A hammock out of climbing line is likely to be pretty dang heavy and bulky

How short does a piece of rope have to be to become garbage?

I never put a piece longer than about 15' in the trash. Any longer and someone could use it for a tow rope or some other dangerous purpose.

When I wired the trailer lights on my Chevy Astro van I used a piece of climbing rope with the core pulled as a covering for the wires. Super durable and flexible for coiling into the cubby hole for storage.

Why does that matter? You just hang it and forget it. It's not like you're moving it around...

I've seen some cool porch furniture made from climbing rope but where do I get an old metal frame for a porch couch! That's the point. I'm probably never gonna make anything so what do I do with it?

Cut it up and separate the strands and cast it into various parts of the woods so birds can make colorful nests...

That would make a great door mat, whether or not you used it, or hang it as a conversation piece! Just a thought! You could also weave it loose enough to hang your older climbing gear on. [emoji848]

image.webp My parents are antique dealers. (Pickers) Dad has ~250' of 1" rope. Not sure what it's made of. He game me a shorter piece. I'm tempted to get it break tested just to see how strong it is.

My crane guy begs me for old ropes in the winter when he is redoing his block collection. He uses it to install handles on both ends of his cribbing. And with 6 cranes he goes through a ton of cribbing!

Is anybody recycling short, or pieces of rope no longer usable? What about the remains of doing splices? I've got a pile and have been wondering how to responsibly get rid of it.
